It looks like there are many nightmarish trucking companies to work for out there and only a few good ones! I want to put some questions to the experienced guys and gals out there to see what comes back. I am based in NW Florida and will be graduating out of school very soon. Most of you know that schools will get you to apply for the various schools that are in bed with them and hopefully something good will come of it. I also realize that most of these companies have a high turnover of drivers which is why they constantly hire new guys from them. Anyway! Being in NW Florida which truck companies are the ones to avoid and who are the good guys out there? I am looking at both regional and OTR but don't want to be sucked in by all the hype. When I first looked at Werner everything looked rosey until I started to research a bit on the internet. I really appreciate your input and it's so good to be able to reach out on this great site. The good one is the one that will take you !!! Living in florida is almost as bad as it gets for newbies. The sooner you can find any OTR job, JUMP on it. Stay away from lease-purchase-rip-offs. Good Luck...
Living in Florida is not a good start. But not impossible. Starting out most people will have to start at one of those big companies like Werner. I started out with Swift. Alot of people will tell you to stay away from Swift but it wasn't so bad. I stayed about a year and moved on to a better company. At all those big companies there are drivers who have been there for 5,10,15 years. A company is what you make of it. Just keep a good attitude and I'm sure everything will work out for you. Hi Bully, I know what you mean! Will it be Werner, Swift or Covenant? Which is the lesser of the evil? I am also looking at MTC out of Pensacola but they won't be hiring until after the Hols. I know I have to grin and bare it for a while, but just want to go with the best of the bad bunch.
I think FL limits some of your options, but perhaps you can hang out and talk to drivers at a truck stop...ask some of them that work at the companies that your interested in and read all of the threads on the companies at this site. I havent quite figured out how to approach a company driver at a truck stop w/o seeming 'creepy'. The few truckers I spoke to that work for the companies I am considering, I ran into either at the Kenworth dealer or a regular wayside rest stop out in the parking lot. Do as much homework as you can. You need to stick with SOME company for at least the first year, so its important to do homework. I am down to 2 companies, but here in the midwest there are many options. Hell, the big orange pumpkin is right here in WI...
Like has been said, my friends in FL have it rough. Take what you can get man. It's a rough world out there in OTR.
