Actually the 5400 mile dedicated route was only for half the year. Before that we were running random. extra pay added about 2500 extra to her overall pay. Factoring out holidays and vacation time we probably only actually worked 48 weeks out of the year which puts our average weekly miles around 5000.

Still not bad for a first year driver.

The downside to team driving is being bounced around while trying to sleep.

    The upside is longer runs.

A strong solo driver could actually make more money than half a team and be better rested. Provided he maxed out his driving hours each week he could turn 3500 to 4000 miles per week consistently (regular route with drop and hooks at both ends). Figure .35 cpm at

    3000 miles= $1050.00 x 50 weeks = $ 52,500.00
    3500 miles= $1225.00 x 50 weeks = $ 61,250.00
    4000 miles= $1400.00 x 50 weeks = $ 70,000.00

I factored out 2 weeks for vacation time.*

*Not all carriers pay vacation time at 1/52nd of previous years earnings.

It's not how much you make, it's how much you keep. Example: Driver "A" makes $40K, driver "B" makes $25K. Driver "A" eats at the buffet line twice a day, buys his munchies/tooth paste/cigs etc. at the truck stop. He sends home whatever is left to Mama who spends every penny 3 days prior to the next payday. Driver "B" buys his grub while at home and eats mostly in his truck. He is single and levelheaded and manages to save something from every check. My point is how you manage money, a simple premise, but not everyone can do it.

So she worked for 48 weeks at 2500 miles per week, and was paid 23 cents a mile.
Wished I owned me a pocket calculator. That looks closer to 30K, but whatever, thanks for sharing the info.

Sorry about the confusion. I forgot that some folks are not familiar with how teams are compensated.

Teams get paid for EVERY mile the truck is driven regardless of who was actually driving.

So she was getting paid .23 cpm for approximately 5000 miles per week.

Another way to look at it is: the team is paid .46 cpm. The team then divides the weekly pay in half.

    5000 miles x .46 cpm = $2300.00 divided by 2 = $1150.00 each week.

In our case I actually get paid slightly more than her so I made over $68,000.00 for the year.

Combined gross earnings were a little over 126k.

I hope this help clear things up.

    Mulerescue007 and jtrnr1951 Thank this.

What you say is absolutely true. Those who are thinking about working OTR as a truck driver need to understand that there are expenses involved in this type of work that do not apply to most local, non-driving jobs. While you can earn good money as a "truck driver", you HAVE TO earn good money to support the lifestyle of a truck driver. Or put another way, if you can find a local (non-driving) job for less money than you'd gross working as a truck driver, you could be better off, financially speaking. Because you won't have to spend about $10K a year on 'living on the road' expenses.

Hey, all these numbers look good to me...I'm making oh, about 18K a year. Anything over 25K sounds like a fortune to me, at this point...I'm glad to see that the numbers I see on these trucking school ads aren't too exaggerated.
