Influx of the Eastern Europeans into trucking should be proportional to the above demographics and from my observations diminished significantly in the last 10-15 years due to the fact of improved living standards in Eastern Europe or more "trucking jobs" available there.
Paying on 1099 is more complex. I'd say it is more often the preference of the driver than the truck owner and it is more common among smaller fleets and owner operator leasing on to such fleets. From my observations, this practice is just as common anywhere else in the country when a person who owns two or three trucks hires someone. It is not isolated to Chicago White Volvo area.
I personally I don't see anything wrong with that set up if it is a choice of both parties and the 1099 contractor pays the taxes due. Had it been such a crime to be paid on 1099, it would have ended long time ago. As a matter of fact, some larger Chicago based companies started paying their drivers on W-2 long time ago.
I've been at this profession for close to 20 years. My own take on who sucks and is "the bane of the industry" is completely different from the previous poster, and origins and nationalities do not play as much part in it, if at all.Last edited: Jan 13, 2021
mladen86 Thanks this. -
It's usually all in fun Joe. I can see where it becomes tiresome however. You should see the white Century and FLD crowd running around Savannah.
I have always wondered if there is some kind of foot rest half way up the door on Volvo's though. -
I know. Sometimes I surprise myself for wanting to take part in threads like that. However, it was for sure Eastern Euro company drivers notoriously stealing my $350 per month parking spot not too long ago...so I could not think of them other than the bane of the industry, sadly. So there is some truth to that.okiedokie, Lucky12, 650cat425 and 1 other person Thank this.

It's funny. Whenever I surf TTR and stumble upon one of your posts I always read it carefully. Have always found you to be sensible and a true beacon of American values. If I ever cross your path I will buy your tall ### a beer. Don't care where your from.

To the OP, defending the use of white volvos with a reference to fedwrex is not going to score you any points. Both are in the same category. It used to be, about 8.5 of every 10 trucks I saw rolled over were from fedwrex. That number has only gone down because amazon drivers are looking to take the crown.
Part of successful immigration is adapting to your new country's culture and values. American trucking prefers a professional image over track suits and flip flops on the dash or out the window. Be proud of your origins, but adapt to your chosen country's way of life. If you're not willing to adapt, why did you immigrate in the first place? If you want to be an American, be an American.
Of course my point is moot. I hear you already. That's only because of deregulation lowering the standards for this industry. If we were classified as skilled labor, we could enforce standards more easily.God prefers Diesels and TallJoe Thank this. -
Those old AAA Cooper trucks make great cane haulers. Kind of the same crowd but South of the Border wheel holders
-
Sorry but I've got to chuckle at this. You aren't the original American, my friend. We stole it, remember? America is the melting pot of humanity, the most successful one, albeit not without issues. The track suit/flip flop crowd does that here because they can. If you get on Youtube and look at footage from the road in Eastern Europe/Asia, it isn't a place you'll be driving along in peace with a foot on the dashboard.sealevel, mladen86, TallJoe and 1 other person Thank this.

I agree with the adaptation and submission to American values, work ethics in particular, and learning English as mandatory.
However, as much as flip flops on pedals and feet on dash should be objected to, full blooded Americans can be seen to do it too.
Maybe instead of Adidas striped pants, they can be more seen to abuse the old days dress code with driving in pajama pants.sealevel, 86scotty and God prefers Diesels Thank this. -
I already told my wife not to buy me Adidas products.
I drive often in a track pants but wear blue Jeans and a polo shirt at customer sites.
I wear black. nondescript laced sport shoes or contractor boots in Winter. I take flip flops to the shower only.
I can't wear cowboy boots...I'm sorry, I tried.
I drive White Volvo still but the next one will be dark blue or maroon.
Now I want to see 100 thanks.
