When I was a resident of CA the rules were that the firearm and ammo must remain separate, not in the same bag, and the firearm must be in a locked case.
The gotcha is that a magazine or a speed loader for revolvers is considered part of the firearm. So having a loaded mag in a locked container completely separate from the firearm is still considered a loaded gun.

Gun needs to be visible on the dash or on the seat..concealed is a felony

The first line in the comment i quoted says " Illinois allows you to carry on your person " so thats sounds like a carry discussion to me . But I could be wrong .
