How do you handle detention as an Owner Operator?

Pink paper, folded in half, either stick it in their locker or hand straight to them. Require parent signature.

Here's what I think about detention. It all depends on the broker.

Try to get enough money for the load that if your detained a little bit it's OK if you don't get detention.When you are going to be delayed call the broker one hour before detention starts. Most brokers will tell you to keep track of your in-n-out times on the Bol or the facility will write The Times in.

If a broker doesn't pay you for detention don't use him again. You will find some brokers that will give you detention and send you a new rate con quickly.

 

Do you have tracking on either trailer or tractor?

That is what we use quite often along with times on BOL.

 

When booking a load, discuss detention with the broker. Find out how when detention starts, whether it be after 2 hours or after 3. Find out what they pay per hour for detention, and what is the max, most are $250. I will not book a load that doesn't pay detention! Make sure detention is out lined in the conformation.
Make sure you get in and out times with signatures AND initials. When detention time approaches call and send an email. Remember if its not in writing it does not exist...
This is about all you can do, and sometimes you really have to stay in the broker to get paid for detention.
