Are shippers intentionally detaining drivers?

When I read this post I could not help thinking about the Crew on board a ship that was anchored in the waters outside a certain country that has decided to not accept Australian Coal they had to sit on board the ship for months before it was finally redirected to Japan to be unloaded there. So spending a few hours waiting at a dock doesn't seem all that hard compared to that ships crew now does it.

 

I was thinking of several us foods locations. Thankfully I haven’t done produce in nearly 8 years, but I still remember

 

I always go in and check with them after 2 hours and ask how much longer. Generally get a non committal commitment.

I tell them no worries. I'm on $35 hour detention now. I going back to the truck and watch TV. Take your time.

The idea of the driver being able to make money while waiting for them, seems to irritate them.

I even had lumpers, that were only about a third of the way through their count after 4 hours, say screw it and signed my bills on the spot when I told them that.

I quit running cali a little over a year ago and only hauled for the same buyer in Chicago...the way the buyer and my carrier handled it was that the unload appt in Chicago wasn't set until the last pick was on and had a 10 hour break .
The buyer usually gave me a list of products that could be cut if needed and they were not bashful about going up a shippers arse if they got stupid.
There was no broker involved either .

 

I have not so fond memories of sitting in fields in central Florida for hours waiting to load....Then running like a wild man to get back up north.

That's on me of course for running for elog exempt companies...I was getting too old to keep that pace up !
