Yeah that and sectional density. The SD, the higher the number means better penetration abilities. Really intriguing stuff. Compare the 308 and 6.5CM (.264 cal). Up to around 400 yards they're both about equally matched in knockdown power. After 500yd the smaller 6.5 has more knockdown power than the 308 because of the long sleek design of the 6.5 bullets. The 6mm (.243) are getting very popular too for that reason. Believe it or not a ton of elk have been taken with a 243 shooting heavy bullets that don't expand until they penetrate deep enough.
