Hello, I am in the process of getting a driver and a friend of mine decided to want to drive for me. He previously drove for a company and one day got pulled over. They found out he was driving under a suspended license that he did not even know about. He called the dmv and it turns out that he was suspended due to not paying his car insurance, which to me made no sense at all. Anyway, he later found out that his insurance company notified the dmv that he did not pay his policy and did not return his plates, causing that suspension.

The mistake my friend made was that when he junked his vehicle, he did not notify the insurance company that he did not have that vehicle anymore and that he wanted to cancel it. Now im thinking that the insurance company would send him alerts saying when his bill is due so how could he have not known that the insurance was still active? I guess theres more to the story than I know but reguardless, If it was suspended then he easily reinstated it 3 months later, then isnt that proof that it wasn't a serious violation?

So every insurance company that I get a quote from sees that suspension and wont accept him under our insurance. I told him to go to the dmv and get the drivers abstract and speak to the cdl driving unit office to see if they can downgrade that and maybe he can drive for me.

Has anyone been thru anything like this? Is there a way around this like maybe putting myself as the driver and just trusting the guy to drive. There has to be a way.

That exactly how it works in pa. Some people are not bad people doing bad things they just procrastinate and it will hurt them in the long run. He probably just doesn't bother to take care of his business like he should. I have a nephew like that.

The insurance companies see it differently. They see this as a major no no. I'm going to have to ask them why id that. If that is the only thing on a driver's abstract no speeding, reckless or careless driving, hit & run etc.. why not show some mercy. I'm going to ask my agent why is that a hard no. I know the ambulance chaser lawyers are looking for anything to cling to .

I hope it works out for him & you. All the best to you on your journey.

Every insurance company has it's quirks regarding suspensions and such things.

NJ has close to 30 reasons for suspension that have nothing to do with driving.

One of the last companies I had felt that driving without one's CDL in their pocket was a sign of poor judgement, even if it was the only thing on there.

A large enough insurance account with a good broker leads to a direct chat with the underwriter and can get borderline records approved, perhaps with a probationary period but a small operation usually can't get such treatment.
