Is it possible to only do p&d local delivery routes with a company like conway, xpo, old dominion freight, yrc and other ltl companies? I like loading and unloading trucks so p&d sounds like a good idea and dock work wouldn't be too much of an issue... would a cdl license with air brakes and hazmat be good for running local p&d routes?

Conway is XPO.
Yes you can run p&d only.
You’ll need a tank and doubles endorsement in addition to the class a and hazmat for the major LTL players.Texas_hwy_287 and Opus Thank this. -
Still pondering, eh? Local P&D usually gets snapped up by senior drivers and you'd probably start as a line haul driver. Still regional, but a different job. I say, work on the dock, maybe move some trucks around, and jump in that way. To tell the truth, with the way traffic is, and pay rates, you may make the same on the dock and maybe like it better. Biggest plus with dock work, 3:30 is out the door, not, "oh, can you make one more pickup" ( at 3:30, mind you, on other side of town in rush hour). That gets mighty old.

I worked with several drivers that applied with Saia and Estes. They all threatened to quit if they were put on P&D because the big money is in Line Haul. Guess what happened; they were all put on Line Haul.

it's the complete opposite. with no experience he will start out doing p&d. most places want at least 2 years exp with all endorsements and 0 accidents before theyll even consider one for linehaul.
i know criteria is changing, though. not for the better. -
what I'm looking for is solely p&d delivery routes driving either a box truck or single axle delivery tractor with a pup with lift gates and pallet jacks... no doubles or triples... which companies use that set up as solely running delivery routes? Do ltl companies do that?

That depends on the company, or the terminal, and how they operate.
When I first started with my outfit, they put me right into a linehaul run, and most of ours pay less then a typical day at top scale for the city guys.
I’m thinking the majority of the high dollar linehaul runs are to be found out west.201 Thanks this. -
Why not just jump on board with a company and take the first city bid that opens up?
That will be your job from then on. -
id say you are right and job placement is company dependent. pitt sees linehaul as the golden child. i don't want to say they play favorites, but we're the favorite. city is where one starts otherwise. when i hired on (straight to linehaul), i want to say i needed at minimum 6 yrs exp, 3 yr clean record to even be eligible.

Do p&d drivers load their trucks and trailers or do the dock guys load? I like loading and unloading trucks so if there driver's do it won't be too much of a problem
