I have a few questions here, I have an automatic restriction because of CFIs training.
My issue is I’m looking at changing companies in just a few more months, I was offered a 1yr lease with a company pulling flatbed. (I’d have to attend training for a few weeks for securing cargo)
1.Can I take the road test in a class B and keep my class A since I already have it and just get the restriction removed?
2.If #1 is no can I bring a dually with a gooseneck trailer to have the restriction removed (would be a class A vehicle)
3.Are automatics less reliable then a standard transmission?

Looking at a freight liner Coronado with a 9speed transmission to pull flatbed vs an auto shift cascades/pete

    1. Nope. You have to test in the class of vehicle you are getting the license for. So if you want an unrestricted class a you will need a vehicle that is an unrestricted class a.

    2. You could but you would be in worse shape. I'm assuming it's a manual transmission. That leaves you with both an air brake and no 5th wheel restrictions.

2a, You can google for companies that rent semi's by the day for testing..

    3. Very opinionated subject, no going there....

You drive a automatic transmission Truck with that State Road Test for CDL A. Thus the automatic automatic restriction applied to the CDL.

Your testing in Class B will derate that CDL to just a CDL B.

You need to find a manual tractor trailer and retest to have that restriction removed.

I had a auto, a old rockwell Meritor with FFE back in 2000-2001, it bricked on us twice turned into a paperweight death twice because as a team we never shut off and rolled all the time.

So one load JIT was destroyed and the other simply was going to get there when it got there. The VP of Operations made a special order for us to stop at least 12 hours every 7th day turn the truck off a hour and then run off do laundry etc.

I usually keep a eye on transmissions and prefer the manuals and plan on dying with one in the hand.

It’s with a company I haven’t heard any bad experiences about. Tho the lease is more like an expensive rental. At the end of the year I can walk away no balloon payment or buy out. They actually give a kick back for finishing it

I have a class A and took my test in an automatic. But on my actual license the only restriction is wearing glasses. Did they make a mistake.

Yes, but don't get too comfortable. States have gone back and canceled the CDL until it gets fixed...
