Just saw on the local news that while the Grapevine (I-5) was closed last night (and they anticipate it will be closed tonight 01/26/2021), some drivers tried to bypass it and apparently used their GPS rather than common sense. If you're on I-5 North and you know the Grapevine (aka Tejon Pass) is closed before you get to the I-5/CA-14 split, take CA-14 N to Mojave and get on CA-58 W to Bakersfield. From there you can take CA-99 North or South to get back on track. If you go North you can rejoin the I-5 at Manteca near Stockton. If you go South you'll hit the I-5 at Wheeler Ridge. There's a TA/Petro and a Shell there. If you are going North on CA-14, don't take CA-138 West in Lancaster, because it will take you to Gorman and straight into a parking nightmare at the top of the Grapevine. If you are already on I-5 North when the close they pass, you can take CA-138 East to CA-14 at Lancaster and head North or South. If you are on I-5 South, you could just detour at Stockton/Manteca and take CA-99 South to CA-58 East to CA-14. Take a look at this video of some drivers that I believe, followed their GPS to get around the mess, and just ended up in more trouble. But as of noon today CalTrans anticipates closing the Grapevine tonight because of another "storm" on the way. Be safe everyone.

Be aware, Tehachapi Pass is only slightly lower in altitude than the Grapevine and can be affected by the same weather and road conditions. A sure thing is 101. Just have to cut back over to 5 from Gilroy or wherever.
hotrod1653, COBB2070 and D.Tibbitt Thank this. -
Presently CHP is escorting traffic on 58 between Mojave and about 10 miles east of Bakersfield due to snow. Probably will be closed tonight.
-
Also, I5 up north is going to be hard hit. Chain law is out and northbound traffic is currently being held 10 miles north of Redding due to heavy snow. And Donner is forecast to get 6 to 10+ feet of new snow between later tonight and sometime on Thursday.

I'm in Tehapachi making a grocery run at ATM and all is clear on the pass for now.

Nobody will be going over Siskiyou and Donner for a few days. The Grapevine and Tehachapi will probably be shut down for awhile. Find a good spot to park.

Florida is looking pretty good right about now
