Let's just say you have two choices. You can go from point A to your house 550 MI with a load for 600 bucks. Or, you can deadhead home empty 350 mi. if those were your only two options, which one would you choose?

    Edit:
Holy Hell, you guys are awesome.

Why did I ask this question in the first place? Because I'm new, and not grounded in reality yet. Or so I thought. I know I'm kind of petty, and I'd rather starve on principle sometimes. Figured I'd check with the grownups to see if I'm right in my decision, or if I'm an idiot. Turns out I was right.

However....let me give you some more details, and see if it changes your mind.

    1. The load is 150 deadhead, 350 loaded, then 50 miles to the house. Scaled out load.

    2. The pros - 24hr receiver, so I don't have weight on my deck all weekend, and don't have to burn half of Monday dealing with it. It's not too far from home, so it's a good friday load. And as stated in the thread, I'm still captive in texas, so I can't really do anything useful on the weekends except work on my truck, because 99% of shippers and receivers keep banker's hours. Lastly, the rates leaving Midland/Odessa area are garbage anyway, so nothing new there.

    3. The cons - it's crushed metal. That means sharp metal shrapnel all over the ground at shipper and receiver. It's heavy. It's cheap.

Now the broker had bumped it to $625. But since I don't want the load anyway, I'm going to see just how far he'll go, and then ask why he didn't offer that rate in the first place.

One more thing - I haven't looked at the board for tomorrow yet. But I can have this load if I wanted it. So who knows what the possibilities are. But this is the first time so far that the money just didn't seem to beat going home empty.

Well assuming your operational costs aren't over about $1.30 a mile, you would be money ahead to take the load. But on the flip side that is mighty #### cheap frieght!!! Honestly, for me it would probably come down to how big of a pita the load would be. Something crazy easy, I'd take it... But if it was one if those loads that makes you want to pull your hair out, then I'd deadhead home.

I’m sure that is something everyone faces. I hate to say it but I would haul my happy ### home or wait out another possible load.

Also are you right there or are you ping to burn fuel to get that low of a rate.

I just feel like that is being taken extreme advantage of. Whether someone jumps on that or not isn’t even a thought once I say no. Broker shouldn’t be brokering crap like that. Drivers probably should not contribute to that either. Just my opinion.

How much per mile was made on the load to get me 550miles or 350miles from the house?

Do what u gotta do. Its a time vs money thing.

Me personally i wouldnt do either , id find a load going different direction that keeps me running until i could find something home that pays worth my time. But i dont have anything to go home to, like wife and kids .

everybodies business and tolerance level is different, do whats best for you and your business.
