Man, I’m not scoffing at money at all. I just think at what point is a cutoff. What is the lowest one should go?
I hauled that load out of Colorado a couple weeks ago for a hair over $2.00 a mile. That is the lowest I have gone so far. I was willing to get to colo and deadhead out for the rate I got in. However at $2.00 a mile towards home it was worth it.
I’ll be in New Orleans tomorrow. Not seeing much coming out worth a #### right now so I am making plans on heading out of there if needed. If something pops up paying at least 2.00 I may take it towards home. However I’ll sit until Monday if I need to to see what I find. It is paying $4.17 a mile going in from Florida and I got paid well to go to Florida from Texas so I can’t complain. The money isn’t all over the place that is for sure. Part of the whole game. I’m learning. I still feel even at $2.00 a mile it is promoting low pay and I won’t do it unless it makes sense. To much can go wrong and we are the ones holding the responsibility of it all.

You need to take into consideration where you are at, $2.00 a mile out of Colorado is not cheap freight nor is it promoting cheap freight unless you are pulling a very specialized trailer like @Old Man. If you are willing to bounce out after hauling in for $4.17 a mile then your average is not much more than $2.00.

Depends on how far and how many miles you need to bounce.

I agree, $2.00 + a mile from colo is not bad. That why I took it. Some of the other available rates it becomes a no win. So it is better to average $2.00 a mile and less work and liability and wear and tear or $2.00 a miles and liability and extra work especially if it include open deck and tarping etc. and there was no tarping on the $2.00 a mile load.

New Orleans is another example. A lot of rebar loads. Not paying very well and scaled out loads. So deadhead out somewhere to get $3.00 or $4.00 on a shorter load and it all averages out with less work and less wear a tear even at the same money and feeling a little better I did not promote low rates. Those can be for whoever wants them. Just my opinion.

Florida and Colorado are both usually dry wells for open deck freight, I’m not sure if you realize how well you did on that round.

I too pull a flatbed and live in Colorado, I only haul into this state once a month just to get home because I know the average rates out of this state. $2 a mile is above average especially for January with a new administration in the White House.

Just saying, I think you did well.

I Definitely was lucky for sure. I know that won't always be the case so I won't do it often. I love Colorado but it was darn cold lolol. Northern Florida was also this time at least at night.

It is going to get you nearly full tanks after you burn the 100 gallons, so your green return is coming on your next load. If it's paying $3/mile your way ahead of the game. Just as you always factor your deadhead miles, this isn't really any different. For me, it would completely depend on how convenient it is for me. 24h receiver makes it possible. I wouldn't sit on it all weekend either. I'll assume is scrap, crushed metal. Is the shipper netting it? Cause I'm not. No way. But if they are, or it's in a trailer with sides and your not even throwing straps, it could be a decent little profit margin for you if it's right by your home and is available regularly. Again, the nearly full tank of fuel to start with on Monday works to your advantage. $0.02

Yeah, that all makes sense. They net it. I've hauled a couple of these loads, and the ground is wrecked with metal. I'm pretty paranoid about it. In the end, I declined. As a matter of fact, I'm typing this from my desktop computer at home!! Wife standing behind me tapping her foot and waiting for a kiss....

And guess what - we were on the phone earlier as she was going through the mail. She said: "What is International Fuel Tax Agreement?"

    Hell.
    Yes.
