I have been in trucking for going on 18 years, every bit of it for the same company and dry van. I really like what JCT has to offer. I think I have read just about all the posts. What I am curious to learn the differences from a reefer operation and dry van. We had very little to do with retail or grocery warehouses, although we had some, you know loading, unloading, lumpers, etc. Used see all the reefers lined up at the cooling whses in Yuma. What can one expect transitioning from dry van to reefer? What about the waits to load or unload. Is JCT better set up in dealing with grocery warehouses and lumpers? What are the dealings like at meat packing plants? How about the horror stories used to hear about at like Hunts Point. Does JCT have any training for the reefer operation its self? How do you know what settings to set the reefer for. Just trying to get honest feedback, and maybe learn a thing or 2. Thanks

    Mustang970,
Reefers aren't that bad and are easy to learn. You just have another motor that you'll need to do a pretrip on. Oil, belts, etc. The BOL will tell you what to set the temp at and whether you run it continous or not. Think JCT does mostly produce. See some of their trailers at the meat plants but not like some other companies. Don't think I've ever seen one of their drivers there tho.

Anybody been to the Sysco in Jersy City, NJ? Is there parking there or do you need to schedule to come in from further out? Can you see the Statue of Liberty from there? Just curious since I will be going there 1st thing Monday morning and have never been there before. Thanks

As panhandle said nothing much to it. Just gotta monitor the temps and fuel on trailer. It might take awhile to get used to sleeping with reefer running lol.

Loading produce is gonna be the same for any company. You check in and wait. Sometimes ur lucky and have the product rdy by ur appt time. Other times u'll be sitting all day. Also you have to be dock while loadin produce so u can chk the product(pulp) temp and count.

At meat plants also depends on ur luck. Sometimes ur load is alrdy loaded and other times u'll be sitting and waiting.

I just looked up Sysco, Jersey City, NJ on Google Maps and got this location: 20 Theodore Conrad Dr, Jersey City, NJ‎

If this is where you are going, looks like you can see the Statue of Liberty from there. Looks like Theodore Conrad Drive turns into Statue of Liberty Drive. At the very end of Statue of Liberty Drive is a large culd-e-sac (?) that appears big enuff to turn a truck around at..quite possibly park your truck there, unless security states differently.

Check it out for yourself. Here's how...

If you have never been somewhere, AND if you have a laptop or one of them new fangled phones that can access the web, with you, {which you probably do if you are reading this}, go to www.Mapquest.com or www.Maps.Google.com and enter the locations address.

Once the location comes up, zoom in a bit & click the Satellite option {located in the upper right portion of the map area}, and you can look around to see if there is a place to park at the customer.

If no place to park at customer, you can scroll around, or zoom out a bit and look for someplace nearby to park. If you can't find anyplace at all, then ya gotta wait till appt time to arrive there.

You can also see how far away you are from sightseeing locations.

I agree what PH says about reefers. I do my friend a favor and check on his whenever hes in town. I dip the fuel tank with a long piece of wood and make sure its temperature is right. I sometimes check the oil. I would prefer reefers over dry vans but I am not being greedy at this point and time until I get time under my belt.

Now that is just to cool and many thanks. For some reason, I was unable to pull the maps up tho could get directions. Looks like its all industrial so may take a chance and just so up. I am just a driver after all. lol
Gonna stop at the Pilot 1st tho and get me a shower. I'm one of them strange critters that likes his shower every day if possible.

Have fun at orientation and hope that JCT will be all that you could hope for. Maybe in 5 or 6 yrs............
