Looove a 13 OD with a healthy engine. Once you hit top gear, 90% of the time you'll just be flicking back and forth between 12 and 13.

I learned to drive on a 5 spd with a 2spd rearend (ruxel) which operated off a button on the stick. Operated much like the Od tranny switching between direct and overdrive.

I developed a little mantra for myself that goes "Button up button first; button down, shift first". For your 13 that would translate to "Button" up (OD position) shift your splitter to the direct position before moving the stick. "Button" down (direct position) shift your stick before hitting the splitter to OD. Works the same upshifting or downshifting. Do the double clutching all the way. You don't have enough experience to start getting fancy.:biggrin_255:

Thanks all, I had my road test and they told not to even worry about it and just shift like an 8 speed. Surprisingly, the hardest part of the test was the backing exercises. Since I trained on a smaller tractor with a single rear axle, it was a huge change testing in a big Peterbilt. They don't turn as sharp and the steering is way slower so I was over-correcting big time. I passed, but I feel just barely. At least I got the job!

The old 13 speeds(late 70's or so) you could NOT preselect with. The newer ones you can, and it makes shifting much easier.

Just be real careful of this (may have chanced since I've done it) but the lolo gear is a teflon gear and is not as strong.

With the little experience I had with 13's before my company thought it was a good idea to take the splitter out of all the other trucks and order all the new trucks with 9's, I just drove it like a plain-jane 9 and really only used the splitter while pulling a hill or when driving in a city when for example if the current speed yer driving at is lets say, too high of a speed for 5th but to slow for 6th, then I'd use 5 hi.
