But why in particular "38 lsb"??? is that the only channel on SSB that you are going to be able to hear and talk skip or is it any channel on SSB? If any channel on SSB, then is 38 LSB just the popular skip channel?

I don't know why that particular channel used.

FWIW, channels 35-40, all on the lower side band (LSB) are typically used when skip rolls in, with 38 LSB as the official calling channel.

38 LSB is like 19 AM...you should always find the action there. It is commonly referred to as the "call channel" and once you find someone to talk to, you then move up or down a couple channels. This was the courtesy practice for SSB talk back in the 70s, also back then, channels 36-40 were designated (not legally, just generally agreed) to SSB use only so there woud be no AM interference.

Plug it in and let it go. Those radios are talkers in stock form. If you want to run a kicker look into having a a variable dead key installed. But I don't think you need a linear with that radio. You do however need a good antenna, no matter what radio you have.

Becareful, I remember the 1970s when channel 16 and 17 were the calling sideband channels, until the 40 channels sets came on in the very late 70s. You might also want to warn him that if someone is talking AM on a channel it makes it very hard to talk SSB on that channel.

See the review at CB radio magazine online. They open up and set and review what they liked. It is very close to a Grant they said.
