    I'm a 42 Y/O class A holder looking for a local O/O to show me the ropes.
I trained for my CDL with Smith & Solomon driving school in bordentown N.J. Learned enough to pass my test but thats about it.
I recently applied for my TWIC card to work the Piers and should have it in about 2 weeks.
I am responsible reliable and to be honest DESPERATE! My wife and i are expecting our first child on December 1,2009.
What i'm looking for is a local driver to south/central NJ willing to give me some driving experience and teach me what it really takes to be successful in this business.
Not looking to go over the road but will make exceptions if necessary.I don't expect anything for free so i would also be willing to pay for the experience if the money spent will really get me what i'm looking for.
Any help that you gentleman or ladies could provide would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you and God bless.

evo. im not going to beat around any bush here. your going to have to go to a big over the road company to get the experience to get a local driving job.
most would say that 6 months is the key number to be otr before a local company would look at you....
most companies dont set the rules. its usually the insurance companies that set this... and not to mention not many small local companies want you tearing up their equipment and most likly an o.o would not be willing to do so either..
going otr ( over the road ) to get your experience would be in your best interest to get the proper training youll need, and is months is not that long..
however, you may want to look at small const. companies in around your area and ask about possiably driving a dump truck....
other will chime in with any other info that MAY be available in your area.

IF you find a local job. It will be with someone like Pepsi or Coke.

I wouldn't be holding my breath. You're looking at some serious OTR for the moment, as S2B stated.

    Thanks for the info fellas.
I actually have hooked up with a company for local driving but they aren't really on the ball.
I will be working the NY/NJ piers working on a "by the load" payscale.

This is all fine by me but i wanted to work with someone who is as serious as i am about learning the ropes and teaching me the right way to do things.
It's understandable that an O/O wouldn't want me tearing up their rig. I just figured i'd give it a shot.
Guess i'll stick it out with this container company as they're really the only ones giving me a shot as a newbie.
    Thanks again and stay safe.

well go figure!...good luck with the new job, and dont ever be afraid to ask for help!. being that i am only 2 years new to this industry one big mistake i see very very often is newbs, and even some vet drivers not asking for help!. no question is to dumb!, ask other drivers at the piers, and online... someone is usually willing to help..
    good luck to you!

I'd be happy to drive a dump. Seems there aren't any jobs available to a newbie.
