Is it possible for a cummins big cam race engine to rev 4500 rpm?
-
Yes, but not without valve train modifications. With "stock" on-road parts you will float the valves around 3k give or take. I wouldn't run one over 2,500 without new springs at the very least. The cam profile also isn't real good for 4,500, it would work but I'd probably want to do some work on that. For 4,500RPM I'd also want to do some bottom end work to help make it live. With some work they'll pull hard at 3,200 and last even in a work truck with a good driver.
I didn't read this entire thread, but 550 isn't much higher than a late model big cam as they could already be had at 450. I'd rebuild it using parts for a full flow BCIV, slow timed, 30% over on the pump and honed nozzles, that will easily put 100hp over the stock 450.
However if you have a high compression CPL now you are going to have to spend some money as you'll likely need a new cam, turbo, etc. If you have a low flow/demand flow cooling system that will need to be converted to high flow. -

Actually a Big Cam III is fairly inexpensive to get to 550 with as it is already a full flow engine in most cases so that cuts off a couple grand just in conversion parts right there.
I'd have to check tomorrow, but a 625 should be a 400HP engine so it'll have the low compression pistons. I'd prefer an STC engine for making a lot of power as you can set them up so they start easier and don't smoke nearly as bad cold but a fixed time engine will still make power.
Is your block cut for LPF liners? If not I would have that done during the overhaul. -
No I don't think it is but I will have it cut for LPF liners......yea after you get pass 550 you have to have a MVT install 1800.00 new high lift cam 1600 turbo 1300.00 larger injectors, fuel pump about another 4k in parts not worth it for me since I'll be only running the truck for about two months in the summer -
