I retired last year and sold my truck and trailer. Friends told me I would miss it and go back in six months. WRONG! I like this retirement!! I miss the driving part I guess. There's nothing like a New Mexico sunrise. Don't really know why(I'm not a scientist) but sunrise in New Mexico at Apache Summit or St Augustine pass is beautiful!. HAPPY? YOU BETCHA!!

    Thanks Stepnfetchit,
I do appreciate the reply. You're not the first I've heard talking about New Mexico sunrises. Must be something to it.
I'm just your run of the mill wannabe for right now. I'll be going to driving school at a jr college next summer. For right now, I drive a school bus. I enjoy it but, at age 55, I've decided to try to get into trucking - for several reasons. I've always had a problem with working day in and day out with the same people, doing the same thing, and hearing the same tired old stories over and over. As a matter of fact, the jobs I've had where I had the most sayso in my work day were the jobs I did the best at. I always get more done when I'm left to my own devices. I hope that going OTR for 10 - 15 years will allow me to experience some people, places and things that I've never experienced before. I understand that trucking involves a lot of work, dedication and focus but I believe I'm up for it. I've read enough in this forum to know that there're a lot of frustrations that go along with being a trucker but I'm sure I can take the bad with the good.
Any help you can be to me between now and the time I actually get started will be greatly appreciated. Then after I get started I'm sure I'll really appreciate your advice and counsel!
Keep enjoying your retirement. After 30 yrs in the business, I'm sure you've earned the extended downtime.

Oldnewbiegonnabe, you are welcome. I normally don't recommend that anyone go into trucking today. You've read the posts on here and this micro-managing by the trucking companies is a real PIB. That being said I enjoyed the profession and made a darn good living at it. I was driving at a time when it was FUN to drive a truck and I say that in all seriousness. IT WAS FUN!! I wish you the best when you start. The trucking industry is BIG and if you will be patient you will find your niche. Some guys like vans, some guys like flats, I prefer reefers or grain trailers. Find what YOU like and figure out how to make MONEY at it. One thing you will learn, freight is fickle. Van freight can drop, flatbed freight can drop, grain can get slow, reefers can slow down. Be prepared for it. You just have to work your way through it. Enough preachin'! Three things to remember: 1.Never let anyone talk you into something you are not comfortable doing. 2. Always know your position on the road and those around you. 3. You can go down a hill slow as many times as you want-you will only go down one once FAST. Best Wishes and Good Luck!!

when I was little I either wanted to be a cop or a trucker, since I f-d up and can't be a cop, I became a trucker and wouldn't trade it for the world. My wife's family doesn't understand how I can drive like I do.

Well I wouldn't have done it this long if I didn't like. I enjoy the people I meet and the challenges of driving in all weather conditions. It's in my blood....need I say more. :yes2557:

Left it once for a managerial position. Lasted in that capacity for two years.

Been driving again for a bit over two years. Really want to be home more, but I don't really see myself doing anything but driving until I retire.

    When I'm 103, the way it's going!

Everyday I pray that I don't do anything stupid so that I don't jeopardize this job that I love. There is nothing like seeing the country and having a blast doing it with my hubby and my puppy, while getting paid! It does take a special spirit though I believe.

If I was a solo and my family was all at home, I don't know how I would fair. Those solo guys are tougher than me :biggrin_25514:
