CB HAM Radio

Another bad thing is (and it's been mentioned here before), the TRICKS crooked CB shops use to make people THINK their radio will "walk the dog", or put out 75 watts by simply turning some "pots". What folks don't KNOW is, the average CB radio's components will not only NOT produce much more than the 4 watts, they would BLOW up IF the tech could get their radio to produce such a power. OR it would work for a short time and.......................POP! I wouldn't doubt it a bit if shops didn't, at least, HOPE for this so the drivers will come back to "fix" their radio. So how do they get to trick drivers into thinking they're "treetop tall an' a-blowin' smoke"? Most SWR meters have two positions: "Forward" and "SWR, or Reverse Power". They just set the met to "forward power" and "fail" (yeah, right) SHURRRRRRRR'------like, accidently on purpose-----to set it to "SWR" IF checking an antenna. With "power", they just set the "forward" to read whatever they WANT it to, and the drivers just EAT it UP!! "LOOKIT, MA! My radio is a-puttin' out a hunnert watts!!!! OH GOODY!!"
That'll be 40 dollars please!!!!!!! And they are thrilled to pay it; they've just been rooked by their friendly out-back-of-Joes-Truck-Stop &-CB-Shop! And he's your "buddy" for life!!!!!!! Reminds me of that song from the "70's"----"Smilin' Faces, Smilin' Faces...........................Look Out, they're only trying to s---w you!!!!!!!!!!!"

I have to agree with you on the echo. When I got my Galaxy 44V, it had echo and for the most part, I had it sounding fine but since i have replaced it with my Galaxy 979, it doesn't come with echo, and I'd almost rather just not have echo. I rarely hear anybody using echo that sounds "good" and can make out their words clearly.

Yup, that's cuz a lot of people turn up the echo to where it sounds bad/makes you hard to understand. A slight touch is all you need. Or better yet, turn off the echo and just add a little reverb....makes it sound like you're talking in a big empty room.

 

There is not a self respecting Ham out there who would EVER run a Galaxy, Connex, Texas Star, or any of those other CB's that are made as 10 meter ham radios with echo boxes and talk back and such. HR 2510's, 2950 RCI's and a few other 10 meter radios are good quality radios, but are still WAY over priced for what they are. Those radios were made with one purpose.....CB. Simply put, the companies that market them, know that CB'ers like all those bells and whistles and the extra power, but, that would make them fail for type acceptance, as CB's, even if they were de-tuned to the legal 4 watts. So, they make them as Ham radios which have a much lower threshhold, for type acceptance, because Ham is supposed to be about experimentation. We hams can take a 148 and modify it for 10 or 12 meters and be perfectly legal. Any of the aforementioned "10 meter radios" can never be made legal for CB use, yet they are easily modified for such, because of that lower threshhold. Remember, we used to build all of our equipment, much of it was even designed at home, before building. So, type acceptance is easy, for Ham radios.

 

I'm going to presume you mean a Cobra 148....now explain to me how it's legal for you to make a CB talk on 10 and 12 meters. Last I checked, that too was illegal.

 

That is NOT illegal. According to Part 97, Amateur Service rules, amateurs may run anything ON the ham bands that meets some minimum spectral purity rules. Amateur radios do NOT have be "certified" in the sense that ALL other commercial radios do. So hams may take a CB radio and convert IT to 10 and 12 Meters. Once converted it may not be put BACK for CB, nor may it be used in "dual-service" operation. IOW, 10, 11, and 12 Meter operation all in one. So long as the radio is USED on the amateur bands, it's OK. Many commercial VHF radios have been modified to operate on 2 Meters, and once done, it can't ever come back into commercial service. Remember: CB and amateur radio services are TWO DIFFERENT SERVICES, EACH WITH ITS OWN RULES THAT DON'T HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH EACH OTHER. CB is under Part 95, amateur operates under Part 97. What amateur operators do has nothing to do with what CBers can do ( and vice versa) and each set of rules have NOTHING to do with the other.

The so-called "10 Meter" radios are NOT certified to begin with, and will NEVER be legal for CB.

Now if you mod it from CB you can not run it on CB too .

 

Right you are. the last time I bought a CB (5 years ago) I almost cried. For the same money I could have bought a 55watt 2 meter rig on sale, with 200 memories.
