Yep. Like other threads have mentioned, one just has to push on through the noob jobs in this industry for at least a couple of years before they're able to branch out to higher paying/working smarter type of gigs. I mean mileage pay and irregular routes are fine if you just got to have that sort of "everyday surprise" in your life. But for the rest of us, we've got to find a way to at least make an effort to make the best of what could easily be a prolonged, bad situation. Lemons into lemonade, mountains into ant-hills, and all that goofy, inspirational/motivational poster junk.

Yep I was blessed with getting canned by the big R because of an ice slipping injury right before I went out on over the road training

After being laid up 3 months I was fortunate to get hired on as a newbie to a little 50 truck milk hauling company.

They ran the Dogpaws off me the first month until I asked not to be ran that hard unless they needed me to.

There on out 12-14 breaks. Usually got paid sitting time once we established I was willing to wait for return loads instead of going home empty.

At the end of the day I ate like a Top Chef in my truck. Slept like Royalty getting up when I wanted to get up. And at the end of the month made more money than when they were running my wheels off.

The paying from the household movers guide is a holdover from the days before computers. That should have gone away a long time ago, it is simply a way to cheat drivers, pure and simple. I wouldn't be surprised if that crap goes the way of the dodo sooner or later. It's ridiculous.

So it seems rational communication can do wonders for your peace of mind, and perhaps your pocketbook.

    Thanks for the uplifting post.

I gotta say this is a tough working environment these days for a family that has a truck driver as the main bread winner.

You do have to run the wheels off and strive for every dollar if you have 4-5 hungry mouths to feed and house holds to pay and maintain

Me I’m 57 single no kids . No gf or wife , got rid of the house 2 years ago and minimized my worries and bills to nothing.

Single over the road not a Care in the World but keeping between the lines is the way to enjoy this occupation.

Having young ones and Loved ones begging you to come home makes it difficult

Heck I’m blessed with some longtime friends that hit me with dinner and drink weekends that half the time just created stress for me trying to meet the deadlines to coordinate it.

    I Hate Stress.

Life is what you make of it.

I hate stress as well, but those first two lines are full of it.
And stress makes any driver more dangerous.

People in that position should never be truck drivers.
