I do have frinds and family living in other states. Like TX,VA,WV,ARK,CAL. I have thought about the address thang. Here the thang, Those companies won't hire you. Unless the cdl is from that state.Which I'm sure you know. But to use those address for my cdl's. The home land has made it a little harder to get a license. 1st. you have to give proof of your identity( passport, driver lic). If you had your name change because you got (married, divorce, adoption, legal name change) you must have proof. Then you have to have proof of your residentiaial address(utility bills in your name, reantal lease, car payment book, voter card, mail from a financial institutions checking, savings, not more than two months old, w2's, a letter from a homeless shelter, halfway house, home ower insurace, car insurace ect. Then you have to have proof of s.s.#. I can understand why after 9/11. As you can tell they don't make it easy. This is how Florida is and I have talk to some in other state who say its bad to. But I don't know that of all states. If they catch you in misslead in Info to prove you are a resident of that state. Then what. I can thank of few laws I will break doing this.Which carries jail time. There goes your cdl, an job, Hazmat, Twic card. Do I have this right. I not like playing with fire. But I will listen to any kind of help you may have. Thanks. I'll check back later!:tongue8:

being that your cdl needs to be took in the home state, i would suggest you getting your cdl in Florida, nothing to fradulant to dmv that way. and as far as swift goes, they don't require all that, so do you know any warm blooded mammal you could touch in with nearer to ocala than what you are?

Nope! I could move, But I still have my lady here and she at this time would like to be by her mother grave, and she has a son that's 21 that she does not want to leave right now. Thats not aproblem for me at all I do understand. But as being unemployed for so long money is tight. I mean tight. So I'm limit to what I can do. Even if I was able to go to different state. I would have to pay for the gas to drive to that state dmv and pay for my new cdl. Which I have no clue of how much if any at all. Lord and if the car broke down. It would be come my new home way for home. Not to get you sick and all. But with out swift getting me in soon.I'm going to cccoooovvvenaant can't believe I'm saying this. What to do?:walk:hummmm! thanks guys!

From a NEWBIE... Which companies are you referring to when you say they pay their students $5-800 a week?

Prime states $600/week or $0.12 cpm which ever is greater.

According to Swift, they currently pay $450/week for the first four weeks and then $500/week the next weeks.

    Swift then pays:
    .25 - start
    .29 - 4 months
    .32 - 6 months
    .33 - 9 months
    .34 - 1 year

I believe these are all current, but if I am incorrect I am sure someone will correct me quickly.

I'm not trying to get too many of y'all discouraged, but as a new driver there is one little problem that y'all have to get through before you can really get a grip on what your long term expectations of a career as a professional over the road driver will be. That is, getting past the promises of big money from driving schools and recruiters just to get started. The reason that I'm posting this reply with the quote above is because it has been my experience that almost all new drivers never have the foresight to do the math on potential paychecks before they commit themselves to a position as a trainee.

Here's some of what you need to consider; first of all if a company is offering you $500 for training wages, you need to first know how much will come out as taxes. Oh yea, you're going to pay taxes! So you take out 28% as a rule of thumb. This will be a very close estimation. Now that will leave you with $360. Next, how much will they take out for your other benefits? Roughly another $40. Now you're down to $320. After all of this, you need to budget how much you will need to live on the road. There are plenty of ways for a driver to eat for less than $20 / day. But, even if you do figure out how to do this, you still need to include in your budget an occasional treat of a great meal in a nice place. Either way, til you pay for whatever it is you drink, in the truck and at the table, and pay for your food an snacks; you're still going to spend about $15 / day. That's another $105 dollar bill. This brings your total net paycheck down to $215 per week or $860 per month. This does not leave any accounting for entertainment costs on the raod, (get your mind out of the gutter) I'm talking about when you may wish to buy a book to read, or a movie to watch, or a new CD or audio book to listen to while your motoring on down the road. Things like that.

So while you're struggling with the decision of whom to work for as a newbie in training, try to take into account some of these things. It will certainly help you to make a better choice for starting your career off on a positive note. Best of Luck! And be SAFE!

Georgiajoker --- Thanks for your post and you are 100% correct. The pay is NOT good !! But remember, you have to do what you have to do to make a living and pay your bills. Again, thanks for pointing out to some of those that want to start in this business that there is a period of time just starting out that the lack of money is a fact in the trucking business.

I go to orientation on Dec. 15 in Deactur,ga..I got my cdl through a local tech. college near home. When I go to orientation does that mean I have to go on a road test. I'm a little nervous about that since I haven't driven in about a month, and check this, when we took out third party exam, it was in a semi-auto so we didn't have to worry about shifting......great
