.22 is the diameter of the rifle bore. A .223/5.56 is actually .224" in diameter but they are in the same family of caliber. Obviously casing size and amount of powder is much different.
Im not exactly sure how to explain it...do you know that .45 long colt and .410 shotgun shells are in the same caliber size as well? Same with .454 CasulPoleCrusher, Eldiablo, jamespmack and 3 others Thank this. -
I definitely know what you’re talking about, but I’m not familiar with the 5.56 at all; it’s like a 308 NATO and 300 win mag, the casings are different sizes but the caliber of the two are both .30 caliber bulletssinglescrewshaker, PoleCrusher, Eldiablo and 3 others Thank this.

.223 is a lower pressure round with less powder than 5.56. You can shoot .223 in 5.56 but not the other way around. Pretty sure 5.56 was developed specifically as a military round iirc.PoleCrusher, jamespmack, cke and 2 others Thank this.
