Just curious if any of you guys that just run one truck keep a spare running truck around just incase your main truck goes down. Ive been having a few issues with mine the last few months and just having an older cheaper truck sitting as a back up here in the shed has popped into my mind a few times now. Question is is there anyway to keep it and just have plates and insurance just when you need them instead of paying for an entire expense of a truck just to run for a few days a year to get loads delivered on time.
Any single truck operations keep a spare truck around?

Given your filing, most insurance companies will want to insure all vehicles "owned, operated or leased to the named insured".
Gone are the days of sending an insurance company your plates and registration, having them delete the unit, until you want to put it back into service.
As a insurance carrier, we always question when we have more power units than drivers on small operators.....say under 10 power units. -
I dont mind paying insurance all year on the truck, I would actually prefer to keep it insured incase anything would happen, stolen, fire, etc. I just don't want to pay the full amount of commercial insurance if it only gets used a couple times a year, given it would probably get put to use in the fall every year on the farm so it could run farm insurance, but I want to be able to run for hire with it if needed. I dont want to run just farm plates on it if I need to haul for hire, dont want to be "that guy"

Progressive will let you just have psychical damage until you put it to work, at least I have one on my policy like that.
Arkansas you can buy a single state commercial plate by the quarter and run fuel and trip permits. Which is alot of trouble but if you don't want to pay a full year on it its something to think about. It can also be done here at the local revenue office so I don't have to go to the IRP officebzinger, jamespmack, 86scotty and 2 others Thank this. -
How about the elephant in the room. These trucks don’t like to sit. The more it hangs out in the barn, the more seals, belts, air lines that dry rot. The more other things go wrong.
I get that on paper it may sound like a good idea, in reality it’s to much of a headache.Opendeckin, Shawn2130, bzinger and 4 others Thank this. -
