My impression with greater weight capacity of axle is that the axle wheight is greater as well. With most roads limited to 40 ton? Having a truck with an axle with greater than the 20 ton rating will probably offset the amount of cargo you can haul. It is also why one doesnt normally see log trucks on the freeways here. Bridges here were only built (supposedly) for trucks of 80,000#.

Default does not mean required, I did notice the low end of tandem weight rating options was 34k.

A fleet ordering a bunch of tractors for dry vans would probably get the lower rated axles as an initial cost and weight savings measure.

Why this matters to me: When I had the folks in Effingham turn up the Cummins in my 387 they would not put their best tune for Fuel economy on. The max torque of that tune exceeded the max torque rating of the transmission so they advised against it. They estimate that because the fleet ordered a trans of lower torque rating it would cost me about half a mile per gallon and make long term 7 MPG unobtainable. At the time the price difference between the downgraded trans and the more appropriate rating was about $1000. It cost me more in wasted fuel than they saved on the invoice.
