Okay, someone please explain this to me? I've lived in Illinois, Missouri, Wisconsin, New York, and am presently in Florida and moving in one week. As I mentioned in another post, now that I've no more living family (human), my family (dog) and I are very excited about trucking. In speaking with a recruiter I found online, just to see what was what, he said no one is hiring from my zip code!!! Now, if I had a reason to want to come back "home" to this area, I can see that would be a problem. However, I want to go all over our beautiful country.
Thinking he was crazy, I called a company directly and the first question the woman asked was, "What's your zip code?" and when I told her she hung up on me! Just like that, click!
So I'm thinking that after you experienced truckers tell me about my dog question in another thread I started, I need to move to whatever city the trucking company is in that I choose so I won't be turned down because of a Zip Code? I'll have all my belongings sold next weekend and my boy & I are ready to roll! (Yes, will need to figure out his living arrangements during my training... But I'm determined to keep him -- he is my family, and you don't give up on family!)
Does the state where you get your license and your zip code matter because most of you have a home and family you are rather fond of and like to see once in a while? Thanks!

Little try to look at a general area where there are companies you are interested in. For example Dallas, TX has several companies which have terminals in the area. I wish I could be of more help, but really the best that i can personally offer is to see where the companies you are interested in have yards.
LittleBlueEngine Thanks this. -
It is hard to get hired out of FL. The reason is this. There is not a lot of freight in and out of here, The company has to be able to guarantee to get you home. If you are below I4 hang it up.
I know a lot of people who were hired by CRST, they are taking people from FL. I am going to them in a few weeks to Iowa
It can be as simple as moving to GA or up to NC or TN.LittleBlueEngine Thanks this. -
LoneWolf, thanks for your reply. I won't know which companies I like until I learn which companies are dog-friendly; he is #1 in my decision-making because he is my family. You have a dog photo -- does your dog travel with you and, if so, will you tell me with which company you are working? Thanks!
Unidos, thanks for the explanation. It's not even possible to get past the person answering the phone without a different zip code, even though if they let me, I'd explain that I have no family/home to return to and so I can go anywhere. And, yes, I am below I-4... for one more week. Thanks! -
Most larger companies aren't really geared toward individual drivers' concerns, as it'd be kinda difficult with thousands of folks. So, they operate on a more 'cookie-cutter' basis, and one of the assumptions normally made is that the 'average' driver will want to get home regularly.
I don't know this for a fact, but why mess up a good theory with facts?

I am in the same boat. I am putting all my stuff in storage at the end of NOV. I dont know who you called no one has never hung up on me. I had a few get kinda rude when I told them i was in FL but I nipped that right off and they said sorry..
Good luck to you -
Little,
If I were you and ready to move to another state to claim as home, I'd look hard at Tennessee. The #1 reason would be no income tax, just like Florida. If you are going to live in your truck and travel the country anyway, why pay state tax. You could relocate there to get established with their residence requirements. Chattanooga will put you within 120 miles of Atlanta and lots of trucking companies. I live in Dalton, Georgia and we have a 6% income tax.

Maybe the question you need to ask in response to their wanting to know what zip code you live in is "what zip code do you want me to live in"?
-
The reasons is beacause even thou you say you don't need to get you home. They have heard that before. Remember you are just one of millions. Companies also have to look at such things as state taxes, Workmen's comp., Ability to get driver info etc, etc...
