I’m just getting my authority. I want to hire a OO to run under my authority for a percentage. I’m wondering what steps should I take and what do I need from the owner operator?

First thing you need to do is talk to your insurance. They will have the biggest impact on if and who you can hire.

I’ll take 10 of those O/Os for starters. 10 more tomorrow. Sounds easy enough.

They won’t let me get insurance til I have my driver. That’s why I want to know what to look for before even start looking for a driver

Every insurance company has a set of requirements for a driver to be considered insurable. My recommendation is to find out what those requirements are and look for a driver that meets them. Also you might want to talk to an accountant and a tax person to find out what type of expenses you will have to pay having a 1099 driver. That would be a good start

do you have a truck that you will run yourself or are you just expecting o/o’s to run? Seem weird to me that you would get your authority and not even own a truck!

by the way you need your insurance active for 30 days before they will activate your authority. That might cause some issues. telling a driver ok after my insurance approves you we have to wait 30 more days until the wheels can turn.

Not true... after your insurance sends (mc 90?) form to Fmcsa it’ll be a day or two.
