I could have hauled a load today from Houston to Vancouver, WA. Paid about $2.80 per mile. A piece of plate that was 10' x 40' x 4" tall. Permits were going to be about $450, which I was going to put on the broker. Flags and signs I would need to buy, and I was going to put the cost of them on the broker too. If they didn't pay for all of it, then I just wasn't going to haul it. I also needed an acord certificate from my insurance company for New Mexico. Seemed like a lot of moving parts, but it also seemed like the perfect load to get my feet wet, as I've never hauled anything other than legal loads before, and getting into big and heavy stuff is my end goal. In the end, I chickened out.

Should I have hauled it, or did I dodge a bullet?

A plate is low and does not obstruct your vision and does not hit other trucks mirrors. The easiest oversize load to haul. Just make sure to flag it well so that other motorists see that you are oversize. Not sure about the money part or laws in any of those states as I only haul in Illinois.

I checked all the laws for each state. Wasn't sure I could pull everything together on such short notice, and I like to be prepared when I can be. I'm wondering if I should have sacked up and got it done.

If only there was a thread around here that one could read about doing such... I think @blairandgretchen should create a thread like that... and if he refuses, then make him watch his YouTube videos nonstop until he doeso_O

I’m no help on the rate. It sounds low to me but it’s gravy as far as od goes.

If you want to get into oversize get the gear before you need it. I personally only use tri-city canvas in st.louis for my gear. Mesh banners are $17 (I’d get 3, one for a spare), single grommet flags are $2 (get 10-20, when they get dirty, toss them), maybe a few stick flags of you’re so inclined. I personally don’t like the regular wooden stick flags, I use the expensive quick release flags if the trailer has the brackets for them.

What their banners look like, them make them in house. E6649914-728C-401B-9A0C-F7F1716D80B2.jpeg 31E0077B-C4A8-4431-B063-57E2067E2057.jpeg
If you have to buy the stuff at a truck stop you will pay 3 times as much and end up with mostly junk in my opinion.

Go talk to the guys and gals at Palletized Trucking Inc. in Houston. They may be able to help you get started with the heavy haul. They take on some O/O’s. Old friends of the family and top notch. Try not to drool over one of my Uncles old Mack’s.
