I've never seen one out in the wild, I've only seen two and they were both on junk trucks in a yard, and they were both Fords I think one was a two-story falcon and the other was an N so they were like early 1960s vintage

They said it was better than the belt between the duals because it was less likely to get damaged or stuck from stuff getting in between tires or a blow out.
White quickly killed it because they were standardizing everything to Rockwell hypoid like Pete and the other west coasters were at the time.
I saw one in a salvage yard once on a complete ‘51 or ‘52 and I and 3 others fought like hell to save it but the scrap yard was hell bent on shredding it to mulch. Sad.Coal Region Deplorable and Bean Jr. Thank this. -
I don't think I've ever even talked to anyone who ran a belt drive to tell me how well they worked. I can't imagine they work very well.
When planetary hubs came out they took over the market for really heavy spec stuff. The really heavy spec stuff was really the last place that the chain drives were used.
Before the planetary axles the idea of having a drive axle inside of the axle tube was kind of limited because they could only carry so much torque between the differential and the wheel.

The the planetary hubs put the final reduction out at the wheel so the torque on the axle shafts was cut down significantlyBean Jr. and SmallPackage Thank this.
