    UPDATE:
Hello experts! Am back and need your advice again! So far, hubby and brother decided to jump and become owner operators end of October2020. They formed an LLC and run under one of them and bought a truck under a guy they know whom they have leased onto.

Let me break it down how they run the business, they opened an account and decided to pay themselves 40cents per miles until they return their investment back. So far, they will finish the truck payment this month (3k left) . The guy the lease onto takes 12% of gross and 2k a month for insurance for the team, he pays for fuel card fees, ELD, Tags, IFTA, tolls and charges them back. By the end of this month they will payoff the truck and are free from the guy. The have managed to save 20k+.

The carrier they are leased onto only works with Amazon and got his authority end of 2019, so his kind of new also. We asked the guy if he would let them book their own loads, he said NO for know . We found out his dispatcher is in another country! Anyway, the rates have been down from January as he says. My question is, is it wise for them to leave and start their own? What would you do in this situation? Any advice, tips ,and input will be appreciated.

Sorry for the long post , and am truly thank full for all the advice everyone provides, it has helped us alot!

If they managed to outright own a truck AND save 20k in 4 months also while not starving themselves, DO NOT rock that boat, ride that gravy train for a while.

Team drivers are really in high demand. They can really make a lot of money.

You got to realize that if you're getting paid on a percentage the question is what is the total amount that you're getting a percentage of? Amazon is notorious for cheap rates. Except maybe around the holidays.

Why limit yourself to only Amazon loads? Why limit yourself to a guy that just has been doing this for a couple of years that only has one source of freight?

I'm not sure what your insurance rate would be if you had your own authority but $2,000 a month sounds like a lot of money to me to be leased under someone and paid on a percentage. If you can handle all the paperwork and finding your loads I would look into your own authority and see what that would actually cost you. Having someone pay for ELD and the tags and tolls is okay but you have to look at that in the overall scheme of what you're making. I think $2,000 a month for insurance is way too much to be leased under someone that you can only have one customers Freight. Does one of the drivers have a bad record or something that the insurance is that high?

You can lease under mag carriers and they pay you 90% And you find all of your own Freight. Or if you we're leased under someone like Landstar or Mercer, they have an army of salespeople that all they do is go out of track down new customers. You would have a much larger base to work with and I would be pretty certain you would do better on money.

Pretty much wherever you go as a team if you really do your homework and you compare what you're going to get paid, teams are in very high demand that you can really make a lot of money.

And don't forget, that truck for running a team has to be almost brand-new because it's going to run nonstop. When you start having even small repairs that stop you it really will cost you money. And if you start needing big things like transmissions and rears and engines that $20,000 will go in just half a blink of an eye.

You need to be making the absolute maximum amount of money that you can so that you can afford to buy another truck when it's time. Is critical that when it's time you buy one that's brand-new were as close to brand new as you can..

Make sure that they pay themselves the minimum and put a maximum amount of money back into the business for that purpose.

hey, thank you for your input. Yap, I here you, but we are just paying bills and nothing more, so kind of in the brink of starving. The guy said he is in the process of setting up with other brokers so will see.

Most partnerships fail and lead to long-lasting resentments.

and most women want to bail out as soon as things get a little difficult or they get bored.

And by bailing out I mean just saying "F this" it's all on you, or just bailing on the whole thing and finding some other guy because they think the grass is greener .

I know this all from personal experience and from watching it happened to lots of other guys. And by lots I mean lots and lots and lots

Awesome to see they are succeeding together. Great news.

Couldn't agree more. Well said. The insurance rate is outlandish considering they are leased on to someone. Could it be the lessor is pocketing money from the team?

Be very careful with companies whose dispatcher is in some other country.

And don't worry about finding a company that's near you.

You can pick any country across the entire United States to work for no problem. You may have to drive out there or fly out there for orientation but you can work for any carrier on any Coast anywhere within the United States.

You can find a company that's on the other side of the country that pays you outstandingly well.

If it were me I would try to find a place that has many many sales people tracking down direct Freight and that they have plenty of Team direct Freight that they can keep you working constantly.

Don't be afraid of putting five or six company side-by-side and comparing.

Just briefly make sure you catch what each one is going to pay for. Some may pay for your EZ Pass or do your IFTA taxes, some may charge you for an Eld, if you are renting a trailer from them compare the costs and the maintenance cost and what happens if you get flat tires or any problems with the trailer itself, do they keep an escrow, what happens if you break the lease, what happens if they don't give you the freight they promise you, what is the detention time or layover time or anything else that they offer, do they have different agents you can work with if you don't hit it off with one, what are all of the exact add-on fees and Extras that you have to pay including & Beyond your insurance, is there a penalty if you break your lease early, is there a fee for Comcheck, is there an escrow account and what exactly can that be used for and how do you get it back when you leave, and a whole bunch of other things you need to sit down and anticipate before they happen.

Don't be afraid to ask a lot of questions because a good company will answer every single solitary last one of them. Some of them may have bigger discounts on tires or repairs or fuel or whatever... You've got a lot of homework to sit down and figure out what to ask.

But call a bunch of companies. There's a company out there that's going to have everything you need and that is fair and that takes care of their owner operators.

You just have to find it.
