McM is a very good hatchery, can't go wrong there. I'd have to look back, but I think we got our seed stock though from Welp hatchery. The RIW is a hybrid, with some white leghorn genes in the mix. The RIR is a purebred.
We've been trying to produce our own strain of meat bird. The industry is very protective of their recipe, you might say, But it involves a cornish crossed with a white rock. Let me just say that I'm not having very good luck with that thus far.
As far as selling eggs go, not much $$$ to be made there....

imo if I wanted to solely make money with something like poultry I would instead raise show birds, exotic pheasants, so on and so forth; I’m sure turkeys rake in much better profit than chickens in reference to eggs and meat.
They have some dang fine roosters, I keep 1 rooster to about every 10 hens, but buy several roosters to see which ones grow some really nice plumage and then butcher the restLast edited: Mar 9, 2021

We free range the birds, within 5' fencing. Keeps out all skunks, coyotes, and some red fox, but not all, some RF are very adept at climbing, kinda cool to watch though. A fence is no barrier to coons and grey fox though. Shot countless RF from the second story window at daybreak. All it takes is one hen to see one and they all start squawking. .22 sighted in at 100 yards, .22 mag at 200 yards, 12 ga takes care of the rest.
Years ago, I was fiddling with the baler in the shop when the wife said there's a RF in the field, sure enough sittin out there about 100 yards watchin the birds. By the time I got the 10/22 out he had left and was now out at the 300 yard line in the pasture, headed for the woodline. I figured what the heck, may as well try. Let loose with the 10 rounds in the mag, first round he takes off running, held high and led him. Sure enough, took him down, couldn't believe it. Good shootin, hardly. I couldn't do that again in a hundred years, pure luck is all....singlescrewshaker, shooter19802003, Eldiablo and 6 others Thank this. -
