My friend wants to sell me his international ProStar 2013 with a maxforce engine for $4,000. I’ve heard bad things about that engine, but I was wondering if I can install a different engine to avoid all the headaches since I’m getting the truck for a really low price.

Can you swap the engine, yes. is it legal with a emissions truck like you own, Im not so sure. I thought if the truck isnt designated with a glider vin, its pretty much married to the junk motor it was born with. Someone else will chime in with the legal answer

He can probably swap it for another emissions motor that meets the emissions standards for the year of his truck. Best bet would be a Cummins, I would think.

Who can do what about swapping motors. I’ve got guys running for me that have swapped Cummins motors for 6NZ in their 2016 Peterbilt. I mean are the engine police going to come and lock you up or what I can’t figure this out.

You've got to stick with at least the same emission level (or higher) to do it legally IIRC. Likely the only other factory option for that truck would be an ISX.

I believe there was a thread on here a while back about a Maxxforce to ISX swap on a ProStar and I believe the general consensus was it'd cost more in the end than just buying a truck built how you need it.

If you were to do it yourself, your best bet would be to hit up the wrecking yard and buy a wrecked ProStar so that you could get all the piping, brackets, mounts and other misc items you'd need. Then drop in a fresh Recon ISX from Cummins.

No but if u ever get popped by the carb people it aint gonna be cheap ... i was talking to a hotshot driver last year said he got a fine for 10k for deleting his emissions system in his pickup... and they got him in north carolina of all places.... Says they were set up at a scale house out there.

I think he got the East Coast mixed up with the West Coast. I would totally have to see that to even believe it.

I hear you. But it wouldn't surprise me that in the near future, within 10 years certainly, that all on the road trucks will have to get a smog check yearly like cars do in some states/areas.
