Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

I live in North Jersey and have been driving part time for different companies. I recently lost my full time job. Considering the job market sucks I am looking to purchase my own dump truck and drive for my self. I am looking to see if it's a viable thing to do? What kind of money can you make running your own dump? How do you find the business? How do you know what to charge? Ant info would be greatly appreciated.

I need some solid advice. I am 36 years old and live in North Jersey. I just lost my full time job. I have been driving Tri-axle dumps as a part time job for the past 4 years. A guy I have worked for in the past offered me to take over the payments on his 2006 Kenworth Tri axle. I would not have to do so until the spring. He would help me to find work as I would try my self. I need to get the numbers on what the payment would be. I would be driving this my self. What would your advice be? Is there work out there? Can I lease on to other companies? Any advice to help me make a decision would be greatly appreciated. Just an FYI, this guy has three trucks and is down sizing. This is the reason for him to get rid of one. There would be no out of pocket expense on my part, except for advertising, business cards, etc...

You need to ask the seller what the payment would be. As far as work, if he is "downsizing", guess there isn't much work, right? However, he may not want as many headaches anymore either. (each truck is an additional headache). As an O/O, you can work for whoever you want, different jobs daily through brokers, or with an established contractor. Or generate your own customer base. Being in Jersey, are you willing to work in Pa., N.Y., also?

unless you have the promise of work from a quarry like mt hope or someplace else i would not do it especially because you will be at the bottom of the list and heading into winter with a tri axle you are limited to work a tractor would be a better choice as it gives you many options but with the crappy economy i wouldn't do anything right now just find another driving job

On the west coast, there are dump truck brokers, as well as companies that have their own sales dept and established clients. It could be different on the east coast and other places. Just ask around and consider snow removal as one option. (you know, after a snow storm, gotta get that snow hauled away).
