Just found out today that I am a diabetic. Don't know much about it and really just started checking things out this evening on the net.

This is going to be interesting and certainly a challenge.

I have been out of work for a few days with bronchitis and a sinus infection, the typical stuff going around, and went to see my doctor. He is giving me the typical antibiotics and we start talking about Thanksgiving. He laughs when I say that I won't be able to walk on Friday but follows it up with "You need to watch it though" in an unusually serious tone???? He kinda looks at me funny and says "You do know you are a Diabetic??" WHAT???

Apparently he thought that I was aware of the situation and just wasn't doing much to help it. Since I have been driving my cholesterol, sugar, and triglycerides have been steadily climbing with my good vs bad stuff being completely flip flopped by a large difference.

I don't know all of my numbers yet as he wants to do all the official tests after I have finished with my antibiotics and gotten over this crud. He says that it should be pretty easy for me to get it under control, but I am 42 and it will only get worse in time.

Well, I'm off to learn about this new problem to add to my list...

    Happy Thanksgiving!!

    Dave

I am not driving yet, but I am also a diabetic. I did have it under control only using oral medications, watching what I was eating and walking 3 miles at a fairly fast pace everyday (7 days a week). I can walk 3 miles in under an hour. On the treadmill i walk 2.5 mph at first to warm up and by the end I'm usually walking at or near 4.0 mph. Also I believe that walking outdoors is way better for you so I try to stay outdoors as much as possible, not always easy living in Michigan. When I first started walking I did not try to walk fast, I just walked for 1 hour. Eventually I was able to pick up the pace.

After I lost some weight as long as I was walking everyday I could eat most things, including things that doctors tell you to avoid. I still had to cut back my portions a little bit but I could eat most anything within some reason. No doughnuts, sugar pop or sugar anything.

I am similar in age (43) so I understand completely. Take heart that you can get it under control, but you will need to make some changes.

I also wanted to share with you a video series on youtube that may help or may inspire at least. His method is a little extreme, but he was faced with extreme conditions.

Look up Dave the raw food truck driver on youtube. Again, You are probably not in that bad of shape, but I just wanted to share some of the things that I know of that may help.

I watch the sugar content on everything I eat. If the label says it contains more than 7 grams of sugar, I do not eat it. I eat sugar free desserts, and keep the calories on those way down, sugar free jello and pudding work the best for me the kind that come pre made in the cups. 25/60 calories each. I drink lots of water at least a gallon a day and I keep my portion sizes down on lunch and dinner. I have also cut out all fast food. No fast food at all.

Once the weight comes off, and it will, then I can lighten up a bit, but this time I can't stop exercising. I hope that helps. Every situation, and every person's body is different.

Hey Dave, I hope you take this diabetes seriously it is a terrible disease and kills over 70,000 people per year. The first thing you should do is start eating right which includes five to six small healthy, low glycemic meals per day.

Second thing to do exercise, exercise, exercise and I'm not talking about killing yourself on the exercise. Just exercise 20 to 60 minutes per day and it will go a long way to help you lower your blood sugar.

I know this works because I help people every day get off their diabetic and other medications just by eating right. Hang in there you can do this without medication. Good luck

I have also recently been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes...in my case is being controlled with diet & medication. Luckily,no insulin. I was thinking about changing companies but now I will wait until my sugar gets a little more under control.

The main things I have trouble with is brad and potatoes....I am adjusting, but very slowly and starting to get to grips with what I can and cannot eat. It's an uphill struggle but thanks to the help of my wonderful wife I am coming to terms with it.

    Thanks all and be safe!

I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes three years ago. Mine was diagnosed as service related. Exposure to Agent Orange in Vietnam over 40 years ago. It has been a real struggle to keep my blood glucose under 200, even with medication. I watch what I eat, exercize when I can, take a lot of natural vitamins and minerals under my doctor's supervision, and take metfornim and glyburide. I am 62 years old, am 6'4" and weigh 250. I would like to get down to 200 lbs. again, but it is a real struggle. My Dr. says that insulin is my next step, and we all know what happens to my driving career then. If anyone has any suggestions, PLEASE let me know.

Check out "There is a cure for diabetes" by Dr. Gabriel Cousens and the "Detox Miracle Sourcebook" by Dr. Robert Morse. If you haven't seen the "Dave the raw food truck driver" videos on youtube you may want to watch some of those.

When diet, exercise and medication fail what other choice do you really have?

According to Dr. Julian Whitaker who runs a diabetes center, insulin will actually make the problem worse. He says it starts a cycle of gaining weight, caused from the insulin, which leads to increased blood sugar levels, which leads to a higher dose of insulin, which leads to more weight gain... and the cycle continues.

Surgery works for some people I suppose, but for me it would be a very last resort.

I hope this helps. I know what a struggle it can be, I had my sugar under control, but now I struggle with it as well. I have even tried some medication shipped to me from India. I had some success with it initially but since then it hasn't helped.

I won't post any links. I won't say this is the only answer, only you can decide what is right for you. Google these terms and you will at least have some new information to consider.

Dr. Gabriel Cousens, Dr. Robert Morse, Dr. Julian Whitaker, God's Herbs, Dave the raw food trucker, and liferegenerator.

now its not the end of the world, although it is a big pain somtimes. im a type 2 diabetic and i control mine with medication and have for over 20 years, course i had to quit the sugar just about compleatley as much as i love it , but i lost 80 lbs.

it realy depens on how bad you have it and it will vary for each person, i havent changed my life style at all course ive made my doctor mad but he will get over it, he wanted me to take insulen to i refused and i still dont for a couple of reasons, over time insulin makes itr worse, second if you take insulin you can not drive a comercila vehicle, i refuse to take it and im in compleat control of it with medication however a word of caution you need to keep your sugar lever below 160 and its not hard to do.

dont let it get you down. luck to you my friend. ---southernpride:biggrin_25525:
