I'm currently driving for Amazon, delivering packages and so forth. The step vans that are available require a CDL to run. Is it possible to earn experience that can count towards a truck driver's history?

Depends on if they are requireing class B CDLs or class A. If its a class B then thats a grey area where some companys MIGHT consider it. But the answer will usually be no as a box truck or step van are very very diffrent to a semi. If they require a class A CDL then usually yes they will count the experince though how much so will vary depending on the work and where you apply.

Get the CDL-A license. Many tractor-trailer companies will hire you and give some additional training to get you on the road. May have to add "air brake endorsement" later, if you don't get it now.
Even if Amazon only wants the CDL-B, that will work later with some extra training to upgrade to CDL-A.

    Dave_in_AZ Thanks this.

Already have the CDL, my issue is that I'm in a position where unless I get 6 months of incident-free driving, none of the big companies will touch me. This would also coincide with me finishing out my first year. So the theory was if experience driving a Step Van (Class B vehicle) counted as time that would pad out my history to reach those thresholds, then I just endure 6 months of huge delivery routes and I'm back in the saddle with a semi.

Yes, any type driving is going to beneficial is there are no incidents or tickets. Hang in there with Amazon if no other company will give you a 2nd chance.

Have you tried R&R Transportation? This is a 2nd chance company.

Class B experience matters not to Class A companies. You need to find a company to take you on as a Class A driver. What were the "incidents", how many, what length of time, who were you driving for.

Just curious what's the GVWR on the step vans and why do they require a CDL?

It would be easier to get the CDL-A, depending on where you are you may be able to get some training for a decent price, or check the workforce solutions or job services, they usually have grants to get people a CDL-A, as most people are still living on stimulus and double untaxed (yet) unemployment, many will not find a job till it’s gone. So see what you can get now.
