I have a question. What is the most miles you would want to have on a truck if you were going to buy it. Assume that it has been maintained properly all of it's life.
Thanks! -
no feeling like petermobling'whoooooop whoppppppppp trucker up..

Personally I don't like high mileage trucks. 3 or 400k tops for me and only if it's a very clean truck with all the maintenance records. Think of it this way; A truck will only make so much money in it's lifetime, period. After a certain point it becomes a huge money pit and a business liability. There is always an exception to every rule but if you see a truck with 1 million miles + it's has either been overhauled or is going to need to be, transmission, axles, suspension, bearings, seats, clutch, paint ect have either been done or are going to need to be. So while they think they saved tons of money by buying a high mileage truck their savings quickly dwindles with repairs and lost revenue due to downtime. Not that newer trucks can't break down but the risk goes up with age. Had a bearing go out of a transmission cost 3 days and $10k. Melted a piston with a bad injector, $15k gone. Had a pinion bearing explode on a new truck, down 3 days but no cost because of warranty. Basically your going to pay, it's either in the form of a higher truck payment or repair bills. There are good used trucks out there especially some repo stuff. Richie Brothers auctions are a good place to find a steal.JimTheHut Thanks this.

Warranty or not...every day a truck sits...is $400-500 not earned.....

exactly but had it been an older truck there would have been the parts/labor costs, plus the downtime. Luckily for me I just switched trucks but someone with one truck would have been screwed. But they would tell you how much money they saved wrenching on their million mile truck. Pay now pay later.

there is really no cut an dry answer as a lot depends on it previous use an intended use you can have a wore out truck at 500k if it did life in the oil patch or a highway queen with 3mil that is just fine if the right guy owned it
you can save money with used equipment but you can also lose your but it just takes exp to judge
I prefer older stuff but I have a shop and staff to fix them if you are stuck with dealer labor rates down time and repair cost can eat up profit real quick -

some things can be prevented w/ preventive maintenance, both of the above repairs sound like dealership rip offs. u should always keep a good mechanic or shop on speed dial. -
who the #### charged you 10k for a tranny?
-
somebody tore him a new one,u can get a reman and installed for less than that. if you don't know,u just don't know, all owners need to take notes on this site. u don't want to get caught on the bill end of a shady mechanic.
