Nothing is normal. Depends on the state. Depends on a lot of things. If you are dealing with a dealer they should know what you need to do for THEIR state. If you are crossing state lines you need to know what to do for YOUR state, which would mean a call to the DOT office in your state.

Put on a safety vest, adjust your seat so you sit up straight, lay an official-looking document on your dash so its partially visible from outside, and bobtail confidently thru the bypass lane of the scalehouse, as if you've done it a hundred times before.

I drove my truck home from El Paso (it came from Cali though) with a temp tag from the dealer (no name anywhere just random numbers like every other temp tag I have ever seen) in the window and passed all scales and drove the entire trip straight through. I had no DOT/MC/BOL and I was not for hire so.........
