you still have to pay attention to the trailers weight. if its over 10000lb, you will have to have a class A regardless of your total weight. the state of maryland loves to grab trucks pulling the covered car trailers. as most of them have a gvw of 14k or more.
Do I need to sign up for IFTA?

The vin tag on truck says 10,000 and registered at 26,000...the trailer is a homemade enclosed carhauler from an old horse trailer frame. It does not have a weight on the registration, nor does it have a vin plate. It is registered as a homemade trailer. We used this rig in the past to haul our dirt-latemodel and have sold our race team...so....I want to put the truck and trailer to work instead of letting it sypon money sitting in the yard.

do you have a dot number on your truck? also most horse trailers with 2 axles are at 14k gvw.
-
I do not have a dot...and yes the axles are 7000#...want to avoid the dot regs and fee's if possible...but want to be legal....if both are possible LOL. -
the legal way, you will have a dot number, ifta sticker and even an mc number. only way to get around it is to not look like a commercial business vehicle, and pray you dont get caught.
is the trailer licensed? do you have a reg card and license plates on it? -
i think any {commercial}vehicle that runs the highway system has to have a ifta and dot,go to state dmv website and inquire
-
key word commercial
-
OK..NC, my state, says no on DOT as long as I'm in state and under 26,001#. Cross state lines and 26,001# and over must have DOT. And yes, the trailer is registered as a Homemade private trailer.
-
if you cross state lines, you will need the ifta as well.
does it have a gvw on the trailers reg? -
No weight on trailer, form is blank.
