I am finding it very very very hard to believe that a former military man AND a former LEO would even consider climbing in to that POS. Something isn't adding up in your posts that I have read.

Belly wrapping the load would make a huge difference. But pipe stakes are almost a must hauling these loads. That plastic banding is something I never did trust. Glad you didn’t loose it on the road....

Next time you tighten your straps, walk around to the opposite side and notice how loose the straps are compared to the side where the winch is. Usually just the first couple straps will be tight on both sides, after that the load is somewhat secure, the following straps you add will not tighten on both sides...... because the strap experiences friction against the load and not slide easily on the load, giving a false feel of securement. Therefore the winch side is tight, the anchor side is not equally tight. I experience this myself hauling pipe into the mines here in WV on some of the curviest roads out there.....

I have checked mine on both sides many times....actually every time. I put my entire body in the air and come down hard on my bar...I overcome the friction.

    PoleCrusher and OLDSKOOLERnWV Thank this.

And those many need to get away from open deck or get trained properly.

I wonder how TMC would feel about a driver not being able too overcome the friction of the straps on the loads? Mercer?

    PoleCrusher and OLDSKOOLERnWV Thank this.

As others have said, pipe stakes and belly wraps are a must. Lots of guys have been injured and killed by pipe loads.

Belly wraps help keep the load together in a couple of different ways. They keep it bundled, but they also can provide deflection when you squeeze the middle. Depending on the load I use a 4" ratchet strap around the load in the middle without going to the trailer. This helps to keep interior pipes from sliding out on a hard stop. Then a belly wrap near each end, then straps over the load.

Pipe stakes help keep the load on the trailer and keep you safe when working around the load when you're strapping and unstrapping.

What makes you think the truck is a POS. I’m not seeing something.
