    Hello,
Was curious if the starter holds back engine oil on these motors? The starter bolts wiggled loose and it seemed to be leaking oil from the back side of the starter where I can’t see. Tightened them back up and it still drips a little. Thanks

No, the starter is dry. It is probably leaking from the cam followers. The rear one is on the block beside the starter.

Sometimes the bolts are just loose. On the cam followers that is.

Tightening these bolts won’t screw up the timing?

No sir. The bolts being loose might change it a little but they are supposed to be tight. The thickness of the gasket should not change.
Older engines were mechanical and the thickness of the gaskets was very important for timing and each cam follower was normally a little different. The electronic N14 has a computer to compensate and all 3 rocker boxes normally have the same thickness single gasket. They are bad to work loose and leak oil so tighten them all. If they have been left unattended to long tend to yack part of the gasket out. Those leak a lot worse than you are talking about.

    mission_creek Thanks this.

Yep the front cover is missing bottom bolt and the rear cover looks as if it’s leaking too but need to take the starter off for a better view. I can use lock washers for the new missing bolts I am replacing with no effect I’m guessing?

Thank you should be good with that but I have not touched one in several years. If you find one leaking around the head of the bolt and no where else put a copper flat washer on it.
Do not worry about viewing it if you can tighten all the bolts. It will work or it won't.
