    Hi everyone,

I'm looking at getting into trucking and looking for some information that I cant seem to find by searching for it. Maybe I havent had enough coffee this morning and my brain cant some up with the right search terms... I dunno.... But, when you lease on to a company, how much control do you have over your time? Are there typically stipulations in a contract on taking a certain number of loads over a period of time? Or penalties for not taking a load over a certain period of time? Anything like that? Or can you literally take a month or two between loads without repercussions?

Depends on the company. Sounds like you're interested in self-dispatch from a company loadboard, and you'd probably want a percentage pay arrangement too. USA Truck, Schneider, JB Hunt and Landstar are the bigs I know of who offer such programs, and there's plenty of smaller outfits too.

If there is...then you are a employee/company driver.

When I had truck on Landstar. You do everything yourself. Pick your loads you want to haul from Landstar. If you don't want to work or go home, you just go home. You could drive empty cross country if you want. It's your truck and diesel your burning so they don't care how much or little you work. They did start calling after 14 days if you don't haul any loads and pulling their trailer.

Your truck insurance, E-log, workmans comp insurance, and any other monthly fee's don't go away when you take a month off. The couple companies I've been leased to don't care how much time you take off provided you still cover the payments on those things...

    Same as above

I’m leased on to a company who will offer me loads and I can take them or not
I can go home as long as I want
I can bounce from Cali to NYC and they don’t care as at the end of the day it is I who is paying all truck expenses
They just get a cut of what I do haul so other than that they really have no money out

What's wrong with 6 months vacation twice a year? I tried it, went broke so I retired!
