Cannot beat the freedom and glory of being an owner operator . That said, I'd give it up in 2 seconds to make 42.50 per hour and toss the keys to someone else and say here's your problem back everyday.
-
if you're making the decision to go owner op for more money you might as well just stay at ups...
leaving the best paying best benefits union driving gig isn't a decision you make based on money..
ups feeders is so unrewarding only people with to many financial obligations or too stupid to realize they aren't living up to their potential are the ones that make it long term
if you're wanting to change for something more challenging, self satisfying, or you actually love trucking
just leave now. you can gain some useful experience and make more money doing something else rather then wasting 4 years for top pay
if you're decision is actually justified I'd suggest having a good game plan. this is probably the worst economic time in history to start a new business and its not looking any better in the foreseeable futureQotisFiya, Diesel Dave and NavigatorWife Thank this. -
$42.40 per hour? Holy crap. Is that time and a half after 40 even?
Unless you have dreams to have a fleet then that sounds good to a make a great living.Last edited: Mar 26, 2021

I would sell my truck and trailer in a heartbeat to go drive for ups if we didn't have winter.
Friend of mine has been a ups driver for 20 years. Pulls doubles or triples up and down the interstate every night. Unless the state closes the interstate he is expected to go. I'm not afraid of winter driving but the heck with that. Some of his stories are pretty ridiculous, when I'm out in conditions like that I just go homeDomingo101, bzinger, tommymonza and 3 others Thank this. -
How old are you?
What are your short term and long term goals?
What is your work ethic?
Do you have a wife, kids? If yes on kids, how old?
How good is your credit?
How much money do you have for a down payment?
Trailer type you want to pull?
Company you want lease on with or own authority?
This business, when done correctly can be very lucrative, but you have to be willing to fall and hopefully fall forward when you do.
A few times I have fallen on my face and a few times fallen on my butt.
Many day/nights in the first five years working on my old truck in the driveway or in truckstop, dealer parking lot in the rain, snow, heat with minimal tools and money.
Fast forward to today, I get a brand new truck every two years and I will retire by the age of fifty. Just ordered a new T680 next gen and it will be my last truck.
So, if you have some common sense, ambition, some mechanical abilities and are able to make good decisions with a little bit of good luck, hell go for it. If you don't have those qualities, stay with brown. I have friends that are good truck drivers with ABF, Walmart, but they couldn't make a good financial decision if their life depended on it and that is okay. They are happy with their jobs and make good money, but it's not for me.
Good luck!!!Domingo101, bzinger, tommymonza and 4 others Thank this. -

Dude you would be insane to give up that secure $40 an hour to become an owner op. Sure you can make a lot of money. But its equally likely you can lose the shirt off your back too. Not to mention the health insurance is crap in comparison.
bzinger, NavigatorWife, Brettj3876 and 1 other person Thank this. -
You guys really need to realize they are forced to pay that much or nobody would stay . When you understand why nobody would stay then you’ll understand why this question keeps getting asked

Especially for a true entrepreneur it would be a suffocating environment.bzinger, tommymonza, NavigatorWife and 4 others Thank this.
