I’m 25 with no kids as of yet, if and when I get tired of UPS I’ll probably go O/O. I’ve always thought it was cool to own a long hood Peterbilt 389. I’m sure it’s more to it then just buying a truck, idk.

At your age, with liittle responsibility, I would go for it. Build your bank account before looking cool, as cool doesn't pay the bills.
If you do the math, you will make around $38,000 at $ 20.00 an hour this year, without overtime. In four years you'll be around $78,000 a year without overtime.
    How much are union dues?
How much in taxes will you pay?
I will not gamble in a casino, but I will gamble on myself every time as I can hedge the bet in my favor, with three things, my work ethic, ambition and good well thought out choices.
At your age, with a good gameplan, you could retire around 40 with 7-10 million in the bank.
    Good luck

The only days I have wished I was back at Buster instead of hauling cars usually included loading in the snow or ice. Now I just don’t load in the snow or ice and I am sitting on the couch being happy I am not pulling a set of pups across the snow covered Rockies at 3 am. It was one of the best jobs I ever had, but I got it better now. Plus you are a carhauler and you likely are much too independent to be happy at Buster Brown, even at $42.50 an hour.

Stick with Buster for 30 years and then get you a long hood Pete you can drive while they are paying you $5-6,000 a month retirement to stay home.

It really isn’t as bad for everyone as you have been told or maybe experienced first hand. I spent 10 years there and left with rehire status. I may even go back in a few years when I retire and either work peak seasons or become an on road supervisor and train new drivers. If a driver shows up to work on time, does what they are supposed to do and doesn’t steal time from them they normally leave them alone. If they don’t they will likely eventually fire them. Some of the hundreds of drivers I worked with at my Hub couldn’t do this and they eventually got fired. Some were occasionally stealing time and were always on the edge because eventually they would catch them enough to fire them. The people I worked with that had a strong work ethic, who also were safe drivers and didn’t steal time enjoyed their job. It was still a job, but there is no company known to man who will pay you excellent money and not expect a lot in return. If UPS paid the same amount as say JBHunt or some other mega carrier they still would be a far better job. Home every day usually, don’t normally do anything besides holding a steering wheel and have the best free insurance and retirement in the country. The fact that they pay $140,000-$160,000 plus to a full scale driver in 2021 definitely is a plus for them to keep drivers from jumping ship. The top seniority driver I worked with had been there over 50 years. I imagine if it was as bad for everyone as you have been told he probably would have left sooner by now. There are thousands more company wide who have nearly as much seniority as him. I have said before, it isn’t for everyone but most people will not ever beat it even owning their own rig. I love owning my own rig but when I am done with it, I may be back in Brown even if it is only a couple months a year at Christmas. They pay peak hires $30 something an hour nowadays.

100k plus a year, free health care and a great pension. Start there young, put in 20 to 30 years then have a great retirement
