Start with a nice level concrete pad, put a nice piece of 1/8" (11 ga) sheet metal over it and the tranny jack won't fight you. Get yourself a helper and just do it. Not only will you get the satisfaction of doing it yourself, but you'll know what makes it tick.
I broke down one time in W VA, myself and another fellow swapped out a 13 right in the parking lot. The hardest part was getting the jack to roll nice.
