Talk to a lawyer yourselves. Even if your husband's former employer and/or the insurance company hires one, that/those lawyers do not represent you.

The statute in Ohio is 2 years. She filed 8 days before the deadline.

She must’ve talking to a attorney that whole time and may have filed “just in time” on purpose!

Everyone is correct about getting a lawyer for your personal protection.
Now I will give you an opinion as a guy just sitting in the bleachers. In the world of suing over personal injury, $25,000 is almost chump change (unless the suite states $25,000 or more). Do some research on the law firm or lawyer that she is using. It is probably a good chance that they might be the quick claim/Hail Mary type that hopes to maybe milk you for a quick $5,000 -$20,000 for very little effort on their part. This is where your lawyer will be worth the money that you pay them. Odds are her lawyer is going to do everything to avoid a trial, because they are most likely hired on a contingency basis and will settle in order to get the money fast.

The insurance company representing the company he worked for at the time of the crash should have the responsibility to provide coverage.

Myself, I'd get my own lawyer involved right away. They are in a better position to contact the neccessary people who need to be involved.

Yeah, but tell her to do that through a lawyer. People get in big trouble ignoring a lawsuit.
    `
A couple in Washington State ignored a lawsuit over their barking dog and lost their home to the guy next door that filed the lawsuit. Every time they received a notice, they just threw it in the trash can instead of reading it or letting a lawyer take care of it.

That's what people need to understand and the importance of having a lawyer take care of it.

Call an attorney, First consultation is usually free.

The insurance company (at the time of accident) should provide legal defense.
But the lawyer is going to look at the argument to protect the insurance company first, than the company that is insured, lastly the employee.

Since your husband is no longer an employee. It might be cheaper for them to settle at the expense of your husband than to defend him.

Hire your own lawyer and get the protection you need.
    Good luck.

Then she wins by default and comes after his house, cars, etc. You might ignore a bill collector. You don't ignore a court summons.
