I did the wife at home thing for about 30 days, thats about all I could take of that #### >.>

 

I know communication is the key. When I last drove, I only had girlfriends, so it was hit/miss. Now I have a wife (but grown/gone kids). However, I still want to be able to talk to her. We both have Verizon phones (as well as my friends) and we can all talk to each other as often as we want for free. No friends/family or share plans even needed. Any Verizon cell can call/receive with any other Verizon cell. When I hit the road again (2010?) - I am setup on communication. I also have a Verizon Netbook for wifi access on the road w/o having to pay some truck stop for 24hr access. That adds up quickly. We can even do video conference. Hey - there is an idea for the trucker and his wife and/or kid!



My son did a tour over in IRAQ and we were able to do AOM-IM as well as video chats rather often. It does a soul wonders to see someone's face.

The stuff needed to do this is cheap now. My laptops and netbooks actually have built in cameras too.

I agree with all the others who said he should stay put for 1 year. There are good local driving jobs that pay good money, but lots of people what those jobs. He will need strong work history to land one of these jobs. After he finishes the year with Swift then start calling around about local jobs. Good luck and I hope you hang in there.

Your husband is already under stress for the new job, truck, baby, money & trying to get home. Giving an ultimatum will make things worse as he will quit & then not have the stable income & having to find another job in this horrible economy. You could get divorce & then he will see less of the baby & you will live on less of what you are now if you receive alimony/child support. Doubledragon5 is correct on stating that at least he has a dedicated run & not all over the 48 states. I am in the Navy & when we deploy, I do not have a choice on leaving my family. So please just enjoy the time you have with your hubby, some fathers NEVER get to see their children.

 

This thread a really got me to thinking. I too am in my first year and am becoming a trucker, and I am not just talking about learning to drive a truck. This experience is making me a much stronger person in so many ways, and as I grow as a person my relationship with my partner and family also grow.
One of the ways it has really helped my relationship is that I believe that although we do not have the quantity of time together, the time we do have is much more quality time.
I have some neighbors who both pretty much work out of their home, they have tons of time togther, but it isn't always quality time, and it appears they take a lot of their time together for granted. Anyway, over the holiday we were visiting and she confided in me that she is very lonely, that, although they are always around eachother they are never really with eachother. I was able to see that, of the three couples there that evening, the couple who had the most time together really didn't pay much attention to eachother. The other couple, he works for the railroad and is gone a lot like a trucker, they were closer, more affectionate and caring towards eachother.
I know for me, being on the road away from my partner has made me appeciate her more, our communication has strengthened, and we are closer than we were before.
Before I was on the road dishes in the sink would drive me crazy, but now, there are times the dishes can wait while I spend time with my partner or the kids. The day after thanksgiving, after dinner I just put the dishes in the sink and said "let's go see the Blind Side" so that is what we did, as we were on our way to the movies our youngest daughter said "I wish you would of become a trucker a long time ago, this is nice" LOL

 

Lavender has a point too, most of the time I want to strangle my husband these days. And if I go to back up and he jumps up front screaming YOU DIDNT FOLLOW THE GPS AGAIN DID YOU one more time I just might... Which is why I am going to be separated form him this coming home time. I and my cats are going to a hotel near of a spa to recieve much needed treatments.

So my advice is to leave the baby with mom for 30 days, and try being on the truck with him 24/7 for 30 days.

YOU WILL NEVER MISS HIM AGAIN.

It sounds to me as if he IS putting you first. Just my .02. As for being home more than just weekends, a local gig will be about the only route for now. What ever else you do..... DO NOT do a Fleece-Purchase Deal.
