Could it be your gearbox? I had one go out on a 2015 freightliner and the noise sounded just like you described.
When the shop investigated it, it came back as my gearbox not the power steering. -
Thanks.what do you mean a gearbox?X-mission? I got noise from inside ENG

When mine was going bad it sounded like it was coming from the engine.
A bad or failing gearbox is typically caused by lack of proper lubrication and service. ... If you notice this grinding sound when you steer left or right, contact a mechanic so they can quickly diagnose and replace the steering gearbox if needed. -
Power steering pump is bolted to the engine and is driven by the gear train. Other than that the steering system has zero interaction with the engine.

sammaxlee Thanks this.

Make sure someone removes that steering pump and check the idler gear in the geartrain, its a sickness with the year yoiu have.
Socal Xpress Thanks this. -
I think most of the volvo’s have that issue. My Volvo make that sounds for years and its still running no issue but just maling whining sound

Have you changed the power steering filter and flushed the fluid. Believe Volvo wants that done every 100k.
Cheap 2 quarts of Dexron 3 and a $10.00 filter. Try that but may have waited to long and the fluid has turned into a cutting fluid and destroyed the pump -
Yes i did. Might be something with steering pump but i will wait till it gives up. i hate throwing money just like that on parts
