Starting at Millis 11/16/09

This is the deal. Someone help me out here. I put APP in last week in october. Millis calls my employer and november 3 i received an e-mail saying WELCOME to MILLIS. The next day(4th) i call and deeann said that everything looked good and that i needed to call december 1 to lock in date for trenton on 18th of jan or 11th for richfield. So i call yesterday(1st) and i was sent to her voice-mail because she wasn't in. So i say, hi deeann this is mark from such & such i am calling to schedule a date, this was at 11:30. I recieved no call. I call back today(2nd) and i get her on the phone, she said she was busy yesterday blah,blah,blah.
So she said hold on a minute mark and i will put you through to MIKE. So MIKE is like, hey mark how you doin blah,blah,blah. He tells me that things don't look good in my area right now that the freight lanes in this area wasn't doing good. He said that he was going to keep my APP and if I didn't hear anything from them by at least march to call him back. He said that they(MILLIS) really preferred to send people from my area to cartersville ga facility, He said they were trying really hard to get it up and running again. WHats the deal guys? should I rely on what MIKE is saying and hold out for cartersville or is this a line that i'm being fed and just go somewhere else.

 

My take on this?

Mike is "Mike Millis". His dad owns the company and his Grand Dad started it.
Mike is in charge of Driver Training and Safety. He is straight for his word.

I live in Wisconsin. Even if OH was the only school running at the time, he would want me to wait until WI opens up. Him and I discussed that face to face when I met with him back in October. I know they are working to open up the GA facility and from rumor I heard close to March/April?

DeeAnn and Alice are 2 *Very* busy people dude. Yea, the same thing happened to me. Left voicemails and didnt hear back. Called again instead of waiting. The problem is you end up in vmail and they dont get a chance to check it fast enough before they get more calls.

Whatever Mike Millis told you, you can take to the bank. He is (so far) the ONLY person I have met in trucking I would trust. He shoots straight from the hip and tells it like it is.

I received an email from Mike today ironically. He was asking if I was interested in the Jan 11 2010 class in Richfield (20mins from my house). So it looks like they either have a class scheduled or are trying hard to see if they can get enough students to run one. I got my CDL already but need MTI - been off the road too long.

I haven't responded yet to Mike, since I might need to wait until the FEB class. They want to have one class each month at each facility but the GA facility likely will be the last to start up. From what I recall, I dont think they OWN that facility but contract it out. Not 100% sure - but that might explain the delay.

Millis is one of the very best companies out there. If you cant get in and can wait - they are worth it. All of the people I met there (drivers/dispatchers/office) are decent and honest - all very friendly. If you can't wait - then you need to look elsewhere unless you can somehow convince Mike to get you into the OH school...

Attending a public/vocational school is usually the best, but Millis doesn't recognize students from schools, unless they did school and have 1yr current OTR.

This is how I understand things to be and my take on whats going on. I dont work for Millis (yet) and could be wrong on some points. But Mike is a straight up kind of guy. (oops, might have already said that)

Sorry if you feel your getting the run around...it can look like that.

For what it's worth, when I 1st applied - things didnt go very smooth. I have an 'inside' friend there and she brought it to Mike's attention and I was approved the next day. I really hope to work for Mike some day and soon.

 

thaanks hanadarko, i don't feel like i'm getting the run around more like disappointed. I was getting jacked up for the trenton class for the 18th of jan. He said that he would keep my APP and was anticipating early spring. In all reality I really would love to drive for MILLIS and I told MIKE that, right now I am content being where I'm at and I really don't want to drive for anyone else unless it is for some LTL company.

Ok..thats cool. Believe me, I understand your disappointment. Boy do I ever...

If your working now...just hit Mike up (email) like once a month...keep in touch. Short email (paragraph or so)...

millis does own there own school in georgia it is not contracted to anybody. greg is the instructor down there and is a great guy if you get to meet him.

Wait...maybe the GA school isnt STATE certified then?

I find out tomorrow, hopefully, if I got accepted or not. But if not, I have my b,c,and d plan in place. I am not going to wait. I am going nuts not working!
