you absolutely can do this, infact it's what i'm doing right now. I got out on the road with a driver for a small (10 or less truck) local operation and went from never climbing into a truck to driving and shifting day 1. Now I am on day 6 and I can drive the entire route curves hills and all without so much as a peep from my co-driver (he hates to be called a trainer.)

It's absolutely possible, but the companies who are willing to do it are most likely going to stiff you on the pay for aslong as you work for them. Give it a year at that job to "pay your dues" and you can go just about anywhere.

 

I really don't have a choice. If I got my cdl and training here there's not a single other company that would touch me without experience, but i'll give them 6 months to a year minimum to get my experience then find a job that pays what i'm worth. Also if you want to go OTR you will need OTR experience, but almost all local companies will offer some OTR work on and off that will suffice for experience. Make sure you keep your boss happy and your DAC clean.

 

No offense to all that have been grandfathered, but you have got to be kidding me right??????????????????????????????

 

Kidding about what ? All that have been grandfathered look at people paying thousands of dollars for training in an industry where over 90,000 people lost their jobs in the past year and we say you've got to be kidding me .
BTW Annie , I was in Missassauga a couple of weeks ago . I delivered to the Colgate Palmolive plant . I go to Solucor in Bradford 3 or 4 times a month .

 

I guess I am one of the lucky ones. I have a good friend that now only drives part time but has alot of experience. I was able to go along with him to get enough driving experience and then borrow a truck for my test which I passed today (my first attempt). I know this is a rare oppurtunity that most do not have and I am thankful for it as it has paid off. I'm sure schools are great but i also think 'on-the-job' experience is even more valuable if you can find it.

The written tests are a breeze if you study and have common sense. The driving and skills test is all about practice and more importantly patience. I went slow as #### on my road test but I didn't have any screw-ups either. I kept telling myself its not a race and take your time and I did fine.

 

Good Luck trying to get a truck driving job now. I went to truck driver training in Fla and I was trained and all and got my class A CDL with all the endorsements.Problem is the transportation companies want 6-12 months experience to drive there trucks. The school did not tell us this therefore I dont have any truck driving experience and cant get a fricking job.How the heck do you get experience if nobody will hire you????
