Are future map updates going to be done via downloading from RM? Is there any loss of capabilities by not having access to the SD card, or is this an actual improvement since there will be more memory?

IUFAN87 and any other users whom have the T5C (without the external SD card), also if you look on the back at the serial number you will see the T5C you can now update via the TND Dock.
If you are having problems updating then by all means let me know here or via E-Mail, rmleadbetatester at gmail dot com.
Thanks,
Mark -
T5B - 2gb internal flash, 4 gb external SD Card (maps and voices)
T5C - 4gb internal flash, (maps and voices now internally)
no loss of capabilities, just a running change in production.
Map updates are still in the gray yet. They have about 2.5 gb of maps on the unit. They are still looking at the best way to get the map updates to you. Since the professional driver is on the road constantly.
Thanks,
Mark -
Incremental updates, as data is changed, via the dock. Very little data is actually changed even in a "major" update. This would allow changes to be made soon after a new road is opened (or closed) without having to wait for a year to get an update.
SD card to the house is a moot point since new version does not have a removable card?RAG Thanks this. -
cc194217,
I really appreciate you and dieselboss for the information you both have been sharing on gps units. I am new to this forum, but have been in trucking for over 35 years. I am finding that a gps would be more beneficial as I am going to a different place every day and not back to the same shippers and consignees. I tried one of the early garmin units a few years ago, and I found myself in more trouble with it than without it. I have been cringing at laying out $500 for a unit, as that kind of change just isn't laying around on the dashboard. The data that you both have laid out has been helpful in trying to justify this kind of investment.

As I am new to this business of GPS. I have a few questions!
Don't the trucl company provide GPS units?: ig not why not?
If a driver ends up buying a Gps, it it tax deductible?
Or could we lease one in order to try it out? -

Both Dieselboss and I thank you. I can only speak for the Rand unit, bound by an NDA whereas Dieselboss operates a business. He is quite knowlegeable about the navigation units and he sells other navigation units by other companies.
I hope you spend a little time and find the right unit for your needs.
Thanks,
Mark -
Almost all companies will not buy you anything. They expect you, the professional driver to have the "tools" you need to do your job. This is to include paper, pen, MCRA and some common sense.
You will be hard pressed to find anyone to lease a navigation unit. Not a profitable business. Loss and damage would outway the plus's
Anything you use to do your job is probably tax deductable. The Navigation unit is a tool and therefore a tax deduction. Clothes are not unless they have a company logo on them. Shoes are not unless they are special shoes just for the job you need to do. The list is endless. The general rule of thumb is: If it is a tool to help you preform your job then generally it is tax deductible. Consult an CPA that deals with professional drivers. You can ask about that in other threads.
Thanks,
Mark
